March 1874 – ATANASIE LEPOVAN, professor, conductor, composer,
religious singer, was born in Sânnicolaul Mare, county of Timiș.
Gymnasium studies at Sântana and high studies at “Preparanderia”
(pedagogical school) of Arad (1888 – 1892). Teacher in the communes of
Toracul Mic (1892 – 1894), Comloșul Bănățean (1894 – 1896) and
Sânnicolaul Mare (1910 – 1918), school deputy inspector in Arad 181919 –
1922) and professor of religious music at the Theological Academy of
Arad (1922 – 1938). He collected musical folklore of Banat. Works:
Collection of Religious Chants (1906); Book of Religious, Funeral and
Chants, and Carols, arranged for one or two voices based on the old
religious melodies (1914); the eight church voices arranged on linear
notes according to the old tunes used in Banat and Crișana (1926 and
1936). He passed away on 27 April 1947, in Timișoara.
