16 April 1822 – Metropolitan Calinic Miclescu was born

16 April

1822 – Metropolitan Calinic Miclescu was born in Suceava, to an old

family of boyars. On 18 June 1842, his uncle Sofronie, the future

Metropolitan of Moldova, tonsured him into monasticism. On 23 April

1843, he was ordained hierodeacon, hieromonk on 31 November, then

protosingel and archmandrite on 2 February 1855. From 1851 – 1958, he

was abbot in Slatina, where he set up a school in Mălini locality, for

the peasants’ children. He was a member in the Ad Hoc Council, Bishop

locum tenens in Huși (November 1958 – January 1861), and then abbot

again at Slatina (1861 – 1863), Metropolitan locum tenens of Moldova

(from 7 May 1863), then on 31 May 1875, he is elected Primate

Metropolitan, a position that he would hold till his death. On 11 April

1876, he is elected president of the Senate. During his service, the

courses of the Faculty of Orthodox Theology of Bucharest were begun, the

Printing House for Church Books was set up and the autocephaly of the

Romanian Orthodox Church was recognised (1885). On 14 August 1886, he

passed away, in Bucharest, and buried at Neamț.
