March 1989 – Writer, philosopher, jurist, monk NICOLAE STEINHARDT
passed away at Rohia Monastery, county of Maramureș. Studies at “Spiru
Haret” Secondary School of Bucharest (1922 – 1929), at the Faculties of
Philology and Law of the University of Bucharest (1929 – 1934), with a
doctor’s degree in law (1936), specialisation in France (Paris) and
England (1936 – 1939). Lawyer in the Bar of Bucharest. Arrested in 1959
in the “group of the mystic-religious intellectuals” and sentenced to 12
years of “forced labour” for “having plotted against the state social
order”. Baptised in the prison of Jilava (15 March 1960) by hieromonk
Mina Dobzeu. Released in August 1964, later on he joined the community
of Rohia Monastery where he was tonsured into monasticism on 16 August
1980, with the name of Nicolae, and where he lived till he died. Works:

(1988). Posthumous: Polyphonic monologue (1991)¸ Diary of Happiness
