May 1778 – Metropolitan IACOB PUTNEANUL, of Moldova, passed away at
Putna Monastery. Monk ever since a young man at Putna, where he had
studied, abbot of the monastery (1744), then Bishop of Rădăuți (August
1745) and Metropolitan of Moldova (13 November 1750); retired in
February 1769 and returned to Putna, where he lived till the end of his
life. In his time, over ten books of rite and of teaching were printed:
Spiritual Alfavita (1755), Sinopsis with much teaching (1757), Primer
(1755) etc. He supervised the schools in Rădăuți and Iași and urged the
parents to send their children to school. Following his insistence, the
fee for the living stock was dissolved, and then when he opposed its
re-introduction, he had to retire. While at Putna, he had the monastery
renovated and the outside walls of the buildings in the precinct raised;
he set up a spiritual school at Putna, together with Archimandrite
Vartolomei Măzăreanu, 81774) for preparing the future priests.
