While doing this, the Saviour shows that He is God, because forgiveness of the sins is a power exclusively of God. Secondly, Christ shows His divinity revealing to those present the hidden thoughts, not expressed, of the scholars who were accusing Him of blasphemy. Thirdly, Jesus Christ, our Saviour, shows His divine power physically healing the paralysed man of his helplessness, telling him to take up his mat and go to his house, which thing really happened. Saint Evangelist Matthew shows us in his Gospel the mystery of the forgiveness of sins worked out by Jesus Christ, our Lord, during His public life permanently manifested in the Church of Christ through the Sacrament of Repentance and through the Sacrament of the Holy Unction”.

“Today’s Gospel points out not so much the paralysed man and his healing, as the person of Jesus Christ, our Saviour, and His forgiveness of the sins, a work which does not stop once He ascends to Heaven, because He promised His disciples to be together with us till the end of the age. Thus, He entrusted this task to His disciples, namely to maintain and forgive the sins in the Church, through the Sacraments of the Church, till the end of history”, His Grace said.

To end with his sermon, His Grace Varlaam Ploiesteanul said that today, the Orthodox Christians also celebrate the icon of the Mother of God – the Prodromite, explaining that this feast was instituted on 12 July, even if the wonder of the painting of the icon took place on the night of 28 to 29 June. Because the Church already had a special feast on 29 June, that of the Saints Peter and Paul the Apostles, the celebration of the icon of the Mother of God the Prodromite was postponed till the eve of the Synaxis of Saint Gabriel the Archangel.

Today, 12 July 2015, the 6th Sunday after Pentecost, also called Sunday of the Healing of the Paralytic of Capernaum, the Divine Liturgy was celebrated at the Patriarchal Cathedral of Bucharest by His Grace Varlaam Ploiesteanul, Assistant Bishop to the Patriarch, assisted by a group of priests and deacons.
