The Ecumenical Association of Churches in Romania (AIDRom) in partnership with the Metropolis of Banat organized last Friday, 16 October 2015, the European Conference Christian Churches in Romania responding to the migration phenomena. <\/em>The event took place in the Festivity Hall of the Eparchial Centre in Timi\u0219oara and brought together representatives of several cults and confessions in the city, but also coming from different countries of the European Union, as TV Trinitas reporter Mr George Giurgiu informed. Representatives of the Churches\u2019 Commission for Migrants in Europe and of the UN Refugee Agency also participated.<\/p>\n

According to the organizers, the meeting marked the starting point for a series of events meant to lead, on the one hand, to promoting exchanges of best in dealing with the phenomena of migration among the workers of the Churches in Europe and Romania, and on the other hand, to organizing a national campaign to inform the population regarding Romania\u2019s situation of migrants, under the slogan \u201cI was a stranger and you took Me in\u201d (Matthew 25:35); this campaign would mark the closure of the program.<\/p>\n

At the opening of the works of the Conference, His Eminence Ioan, Archbishop of Timi\u0219oara and Metropolitan of Banat, addressed to the audience regarding the proper collaboration of every representatives of the cults and religious confessions in order to find real solutions in the interest of supporting humanitarian actions organized in partnership with the Romanian authorized state institutions. Next, the representative of the Churches\u2019 Commission for Migrants in Europe Mrs Doris Peschke presented Europe\u2019s answer to the current refugee situation, while Police Commissioner Mr Pintea Filimon, Director of the Regional Centre for Accommodation and Asylum Procedures in Timi\u0219oara, presented the situation of migration phenomena in Romania and the migration flows in our country. Also, the representative of the UN Refugee Agency Mrs Gabriela Leu emphasized the importance of cooperation with the civil society in the process of migrant integration in the current situation, while program manager of AIDRom Mrs Elena Timofticiuc presented the project: \u201cThe Churches in Romania responding to the migration phenomena<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n

There is a need of involving the entire community: \u201cThrough this Conference, we wish to settle common actions in this region, taking into the account the specific situations of this moment. As indicated by the statistics of the past two years, the migration phenomena in Romania has experienced an unexpected increase, and the Churches in Europe are aware of this fact. Moreover, the actual situation in Romania is unprecedented. The migration phenomena represents a challenge both for the society that we live in, and also for the Churches. Romania is now facing a challenge that can be surpassed only by involving the entire community in this process. During the last three years, AIDRom carried out several projects aiming to assist the Asylum seekers in Romania, the persons under a form of protection, and the persons relocated from Turkey. Nevertheless, it inaugurated an Accommodation Centre in <\/em>Timi\u0219oara with a cappacity of 18 persons, and a Centre in Bucharest, which will soon receive 18 mothers with children. In this respect, AIDRom together with the partner and financing institutions initiate several activities meant to empower AIDRom member Churches in the issue of migration<\/em>\u201d, AIDRom project manager Mrs Elena Timofticiuc stated.<\/p>\n

In the end, discussions were held during which the representatives of several cults and religious confessions in Greece, Spain and Hungary exemplified some modalities of involving European Christian Churches in the issue of migration, successfully approached over the years. <\/p>\n
