Beloved brothers and sisters in the Lord,
\nWith God\u2019s grace, today we enter the new ecclesiastical year, even as we continue to provide witness \u201cthrough him who loved us\u201d (Romans 8.38) and \u201cgive an account for the hope that lies in us\u201d (1 Peter 3.15), living in the Church, in Christ and according to Christ, who promised to be with us \u201call the days of our life, to the end of the age.\u201d (Matthew 28.20)<\/p>\n

Twenty-eight years have passed since the synodal decree of the Ecumenical Patriarchate to establish the Feast of the Indiction as the \u201cDay of Protection for the Environment,\u201d when we offer prayers and supplications at the sacred Center of Orthodoxy \u201cfor all creation.\u201d The relevant patriarchal encyclical (September 1, 1989) invited all Orthodox and other Christian faithful on this day to lift up prayers of thanksgiving to the Creator of all for \u201cthe great gift of Creation\u201d along with petitions for its preservation.<\/p>\n

We express our joy and satisfaction for the broad reception and fruitful influence of this initiative by the Church of Constantinople. We demonstrated the spiritual roots of the ecological crisis as well as the need to repent and prioritize the values of contemporary humankind. We affirmed that the exploitation and destruction of creation constitute a perversion and distortion of the Christian ethos, rather than the inevitable consequence of the biblical command to \u201cincrease and multiply\u201d (Genesis 1.22), but also that our anti-ecological conduct is an offense to the Creator and a transgression of his commandments, ultimately working against the authentic destiny of the human person. There cannot be any sustainable development at the expense of spiritual values and the natural environment.<\/p>\n

The Holy and Great Church of Christ has championed and continues to champion the eco-friendly dynamic of our Orthodox faith, emphasizing the Eucharistic purpose of creation, the response of the faithful as \u201cpriest\u201d of creation in an effort to offer it unceasingly to the Creator of all, as well as the principle of asceticism as the response to the modern sense of gratification. Indeed, respect for creation belongs to the very core of our orthodox tradition.<\/p>\n

We are especially disturbed by the fact that, while it is clear that the ecological crisis is constantly escalating, in the name of financial growth and technological development, humanity has become oblivious to the global appeals for radical change in our attitude toward creation. It is obvious that the resulting deformation and devastation of the natural environment is a direct consequence of a specific model of economic progress, which is nevertheless indifferent to its ecological repercussions. The short-term benefits dictated by the rise of living standards in some parts of the world simply camouflage the irrationality of abuse and conquest of creation. Corporate business that does not respect the planet as our common home cannot be sanctioned as business at all. The contemporary unrestrained commerce of globalization goes hand-in-hand with the spectacular development of science and technology, which despite manifold advantages is also accompanied by an arrogance over and abuse of nature. Modern man knows this very well but acts as if he is entirely unaware. We know that nature is not restored and renewed endlessly, yet we ignore the negative implications of \u201ctrading\u201d in the environment. This explosive combination of unrestrained commerce and science \u2013 that is to say, the limitless confidence in the power of science and technology \u2013 merely increases the risks threatening the integrity of creation and humankind.<\/p>\n

The Holy and Great Council of the Orthodox Church spelled out with wisdom and clarity the dangers of \u201cautonomizing economy\u201d or separating economy from the vital needs of humanity that are only served within a sustainable environment. Instead, it proposed an economy \u201cfounded on the principles of the Gospel\u201d<\/a>[1]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0in order to address the modern ecological challenge \u201con the basis of the principles of the Christian tradition.\u201d<\/a>[2]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0In response to the threats of our age, the tradition of the Church demands \u201ca radical change of attitude and conduct\u201d; in response to the ecological crisis, it proposes a spirit of asceticism, \u201cfrugality and abstinence\u201d<\/a>[3]<\/sup><\/a>; in response to our \u201cgreed,\u201d<\/a>[4]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0it calls for \u201cthe deification of our needs and attitude of acquisition.\u201d<\/a>[5]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0The Holy and Great Council also emphatically referred to the \u201csocial dimensions and tragic consequences of destroying the natural environment.\u201d<\/a>[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Therefore, echoing the decisions of this Council, we too underline through this encyclical the close connection between ecological and social issues, as well as their common roots that lie in the \u201cimprudent heart\u201d that is fallen and sinful as well as in the inappropriate use of our God-given freedom. The destruction of nature and society is always preceded by an internal \u201creversal of values,\u201d by spiritual and ethical damage. When material possessions dominate our heart and mind, then our attitude toward our fellow human beings and toward creation inevitably becomes possessive and abusive. In biblical terms, the \u201cbad tree\u201d always \u201cproduces evil fruit.\u201d (Matthew 7.17) Furthermore, by extension, we would underline that respecting creation and other people share the same spiritual source and origin, namely our renewal in Christ and spiritual freedom. Just as environmental destruction is related to social injustice, so too an eco-friendly attitude is inseparable from social solidarity.<\/p>\n

What also becomes apparent is that the solution to the multi-faceted contemporary human crisis \u2013 namely, the crisis facing human culture and the natural environment \u2013 demands a multi-dimensional mobilization and joint effort. Much as every other vital problem, the underlying and interconnected ecological and social crisis cannot possibly be addressed without inter-Christian and inter-religious collaboration. Therefore, dialogue becomes the fertile ground for promoting existing eco-friendly and social traditions in order to stimulate environmental and communal discussion, while at the same time initiating a constructive criticism of progress understood exclusively in technological and economic terms at the expense of creation and civilization.<\/p>\n

In closing, we once again reiterate the inseparable nature of respecting creation and humanity, and we call upon all people of good will to undertake the good struggle for the protection of the natural environment and the establishment of solidarity. May the Lord and giver of all good things, through the intercessions of the all-blessed Mother of God, grant all of you \u201ca burning within your hearts for all creation\u201d<\/a>[7]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0and \u201ca stirring of love and good works.\u201d (Hebrews 10.24)

Il y a vingt-huit ans, par d\u00e9cision synodale, le Patriarcat \u0152cum\u00e9nique a fix\u00e9 le f\u00eate de l\u2019Indiction comme \u00ab Journ\u00e9e de protection de l\u2019environnement \u00bb au cours de laquelle, des pri\u00e8res et des suppliques \u00ab pour la cr\u00e9ation tout enti\u00e8re \u00bb sont adress\u00e9es depuis le Centre sacr\u00e9 de l\u2019Orthodoxie. L\u2019encyclique patriarcale diffus\u00e9e \u00e0 cette occasion a invit\u00e9 le monde orthodoxe et l\u2019ensemble du monde chr\u00e9tien \u00e0 adresser, en ce jour, des pri\u00e8res pour remercier le Cr\u00e9ateur de toutes choses du \u00ab grand don de la Cr\u00e9ation \u00bb et Le supplier de prot\u00e9ger celle-ci.<\/p>\n

Nous exprimons humblement notre joie et satisfaction pour l\u2019\u00e9cho et la fructification de cette initiative de l\u2019\u00c9glise constantinopolitaine. Nous avons montr\u00e9 les racines spirituelles de la crise \u00e9cologique, la n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 aussi de faire p\u00e9nitence et de proc\u00e9der \u00e0 une nouvelle hi\u00e9rarchisation des valeurs de l\u2019homme moderne. Il s\u2019est av\u00e9r\u00e9 que l\u2019exploitation et la destruction de la cr\u00e9ation est une perversion et alt\u00e9ration de l\u2019ethos chr\u00e9tien ; que ce n\u2019est pas une cons\u00e9quence in\u00e9luctable du commandement biblique \u00ab soyez f\u00e9conds et prolifiques \u00bb ; que le comportement anti-\u00e9cologique est une insulte au Cr\u00e9ateur et une transgression \u00e0 Ses commandements, et que ce comportement va \u00e0 l\u2019encontre de la vraie destination de l\u2019\u00eatre humain. Il ne saurait y avoir de d\u00e9veloppement viable aux d\u00e9pens des valeurs spirituelles et de l\u2019environnement naturel.<\/p>\n

La sainte Grande \u00c9glise du Christ ne cesse de mettre en relief le potentiel \u00e9cophile de notre foi orthodoxe, montrant l\u2019usage eucharistique de la cr\u00e9ation, la fonction du croyant en tant qu\u2019\u00ab officiant \u00bb de la Cr\u00e9ation qui sans repos ni tr\u00eave r\u00e9f\u00e8re celle-ci au Cr\u00e9ateur de tout et la valeur incomparable de l\u2019esprit asc\u00e9tique comme antidote \u00e0 l\u2019eud\u00e9monisme contemporain. Effectivement, le respect de la cr\u00e9ation appartient au noyau de la tradition orthodoxe.<\/p>\n

Nous sommes tr\u00e8s pr\u00e9occup\u00e9s du fait qu\u2019alors que la crise \u00e9cologique va indubitablement en s\u2019aggravant, l\u2019humanit\u00e9 fasse semblant, au nom du d\u00e9veloppement \u00e9conomique et des applications technologiques, de ne pas entendre les appels pour changer radicalement de comportement envers la cr\u00e9ation. Manifestement, la d\u00e9gradation d\u00e9j\u00e0 subie par l\u2019environnement naturel est une cons\u00e9quence d\u2019un mod\u00e8le concret de d\u00e9veloppement \u00e9conomique qui se d\u00e9sint\u00e9resse de ses retomb\u00e9es anti-\u00e9cologiques. Les b\u00e9n\u00e9fices \u00e0 court terme, associ\u00e9s \u00e0 l\u2019am\u00e9lioration du niveau de vie dans certaines r\u00e9gions de la terre, ne font que dissimuler la d\u00e9raison que constituent l\u2019exploitation et le pillage de la cr\u00e9ation. L\u2019activit\u00e9 \u00e9conomique qui ne respecte pas la maison de la vie, c\u2019est de l\u2019anti-\u00e9conomie et non pas de l\u2019\u00e9co-nomie. L\u2019\u00e9conomisme effr\u00e9n\u00e9 pratiqu\u00e9 par la globalisation va aujourd\u2019hui de pair avec le d\u00e9veloppement fulgurant de la science et de la technologie qui, malgr\u00e9 ses b\u00e9n\u00e9fices, est assorti d\u2019une attitude orgueilleuse \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9gard de la cr\u00e9ation et de l\u2019exploitation diverse de celle-ci. Notre contemporain sait, mais il agit comme s\u2019il ne savait pas. Il sait que la nature ne se renouvelle pas ind\u00e9finiment, mais il se d\u00e9sint\u00e9resse des cons\u00e9quences n\u00e9gatives sur l\u2019environnement du \u00ab march\u00e9 technologique \u00bb. Ce m\u00e9lange vraiment explosif de l\u2019\u00e9conomisme d\u00e9brid\u00e9 et du scientifisme, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire de la confiance illimit\u00e9e plac\u00e9e dans le pouvoir de la science et de l\u2019\u00e9conomie, accro\u00eet les risques pesant sur l\u2019int\u00e9grit\u00e9 de la cr\u00e9ation et sur l\u2019\u00eatre humain.<\/p>\n

Le saint et grand Concile de l\u2019\u00c9glise orthodoxe a sagement et clairement nomm\u00e9 les risques de la \u00ab loi de l\u2019\u00e9conomie \u00bb, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire l\u2019\u00e9conomie \u00e9mancip\u00e9e par rapport aux besoins vitaux de l\u2019\u00eatre humain qui ne peuvent \u00eatre valablement servis que dans un environnement naturel viable ; il a propos\u00e9 une \u00e9conomie durable \u00ab fond\u00e9e sur les principes de l\u2019\u00c9vangile \u00bb et la solution au probl\u00e8me \u00e9cologique contemporain \u00ab sur la base des principes de la tradition chr\u00e9tienne \u00bb . Face aux menaces contemporaines, la tradition de l\u2019\u00c9glise exige de changer radicalement \u00ab de mentalit\u00e9 et de comportement \u00bb \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9gard de la cr\u00e9ation, d\u2019adopter l\u2019esprit asc\u00e9tique \u00ab de frugalit\u00e9 et de mod\u00e9ration \u00bb , pour affronter \u00ab l\u2019avidit\u00e9 \u00bb , \u00ab le culte des besoins et le sentiment de possession \u00bb . Le saint et grand Concile a aussi mis l\u2019accent sur \u00ab les aspects sociaux et les retomb\u00e9es tragiques que repr\u00e9sente la destruction de l\u2019environnement naturel \u00bb .<\/p>\n

Nous conformant aux d\u00e9cisions de ce Concile, dans notre pr\u00e9sente encyclique, nous soulignons le rapport \u00e9troit liant les probl\u00e8mes environnementaux et sociaux ; le fait qu\u2019ils puisent leur racine dans le \u00ab c\u0153ur insens\u00e9 \u00bb sans Dieu, dans la chute et le p\u00e9ch\u00e9, dans l\u2019abus de la libert\u00e9 humaine accord\u00e9e par Dieu. La destruction de l\u2019environnement et de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 est toujours pr\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9e d\u2019un \u00ab bouleversement des valeurs \u00bb venant de l\u2019int\u00e9rieur, d\u2019une d\u00e9ch\u00e9ance spirituelle et morale. Lorsque l\u2019avoir domine notre intelligence et notre c\u0153ur, notre attitude tant envers notre prochain qu\u2019\u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9gard de la cr\u00e9ation est in\u00e9vitablement possessive et impropre. Selon l\u2019\u00c9vangile, \u00ab L\u2019arbre malade \u00bb produit toujours \u00ab de mauvais fruits \u00bb .<\/p>\n

Nous soulignons respectivement que la consid\u00e9ration vou\u00e9e \u00e0 la cr\u00e9ation et \u00e0 l\u2019\u00eatre humain ont la m\u00eame source et point de d\u00e9part, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire le renouveau en Christ de l\u2019homme et sa libert\u00e9 b\u00e9nie. De m\u00eame la destruction de l\u2019environnement et l\u2019injustice sociale vont de pair, de m\u00eame le comportement \u00e9cophile et la solidarit\u00e9 sociale sont indissociables.<\/p>\n

Il va de soi que pour faire face \u00e0 la crise plurivalente \u00e0 laquelle l\u2019humanit\u00e9, sa civilisation et sa maison sont confront\u00e9es de nos jours, une mobilisation de toutes parts et un effort commun s\u2019imposent. De m\u00eame s\u2019agissant des probl\u00e8mes majeurs, de m\u00eame des crises qui s\u00e9vissent et s\u2019interp\u00e9n\u00e8trent de l\u2019environnement naturel et de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9, il est impossible d\u2019en venir \u00e0 bout sans une coop\u00e9ration interchr\u00e9tienne et interreligieuse. Le dialogue est en l\u2019occurrence le terrain propice pour mettre en relief les traditions \u00e9cophiles et sociales, la sensibilisation \u00e9cologique et sociale ; pour faire aussi une critique constructive du progr\u00e8s exclusivement technologique et \u00e9conomique, et des mod\u00e8les individualistes et sociocentriques, op\u00e9rant au d\u00e9triment de la cr\u00e9ation et de la civilisation de la personne humaine.<\/p>\n

En concluant, nous soulignons encore une fois le respect irr\u00e9ductible envers la cr\u00e9ation et la personne humaine, nous appelons tous les \u00eatres humains de bonne volont\u00e9 \u00e0 s\u2019engager dans le bon combat pour prot\u00e9ger l\u2019environnement naturel et pour consolider la solidarit\u00e9, et nous prions le Seigneur dispensateur de tout bien, par l\u2019intercession de la toute-Sainte M\u00e8re de Dieu Pammakaristos, de gratifier ses enfants d\u2019\u00ab un c\u0153ur se consumant pour toute la cr\u00e9ation \u00bb et \u00ab excit\u00e9 \u00e0 la charit\u00e9 et aux \u0153uvres bonnes \u00bb . 1er septembre 2017<\/p>\n
