Patriarch Daniel sent a letter to Metropolitan Emmanuel of France (Ecumenical Patriarchate), expressing his sorrow for the loss of \u2018one of the distinguished personalities of French Orthodoxy, founder of monasteries, author and translator,\u2019 recalling that in his life Fr Placide professed \u2018Orthodox values at a time when France was facing accentuated secularist trends and major challenges to Christian family and culture.\u2019<\/p>\n

Your Eminence,<\/p>\n
We were deeply saddened to learn of the passing from this world of Archimandrite Placide Deseille, founder, and abbot of Saint Anthony the Great Monastery in France.<\/p>\n
One of the distinguished personalities of French Orthodoxy, founder of monasteries, author, and translator, father Placide Deseille was very close to our country and Church. He testified that in Romania he first discovered \u2018an Orthodox people and a Church that, despite the cruelest persecutions, have not ceased to keep alive the faith in Christ through the blood of the martyrs and the sacrifice of many confessors, and where despite difficulties, monastic life was flourishing around several spiritual fathers bearing the fire of the Holy Spirit.\u2019<\/p>\n
He often referred to his visits to the Monasteries in Romania and his spiritual conversations with Fr. Cleopas Ilie, Fr. Petroniu T\u0103nase, Fr. Teofil P\u0103r\u0103ian, Fr. Dumitru St\u0103niloae, and other Romanian Orthodox elders with high spiritual experience.<\/p>\n
After being received in the Orthodox Church, Father Placide led a life professing Orthodox values at a time when France was facing accentuated secularist trends and major challenges to Christian family and culture.<\/p>\n
In these sorrowful moments, we pray to the Lord Jesus Christ who was baptized in the Jordan River for the enlightenment and the salvation of the world to place the soul of his servant Archimandrite Placide in the dwelling place of the righteous who enjoy the light, peace, and love of the All-Holy Trinity.<\/p>\n
May his memory be eternal from generation to generation!<\/p>\n
