Irinej supports Serbian Church\u2019s proposed name change"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"os\" data-enum=\"p3\" data-field=\" paragraph\">His Holiness Patriarch Irinej of Serbia has voiced his approval of the proposal to amend the name of the Serbian Orthodox Church to emphasize its inextricable ties to much-suffering Kosovo, reports\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.b92.net\/eng\/news\/politics.php?yyyy=2018&amp;mm=03&amp;dd=08&amp;nav_id=103659\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">B92<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"os\" data-enum=\"p4\" data-field=\" paragraph\">The Serbian Church is set to vote on a\u00a0<a class=\"tooltip\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/orthochristian.com\/111290.html\">new Church constitution<\/a>\u00a0in May, which includes the addition of \u201cthe Patriarchate of Pe\u0107\u201d to the title \u201cSerbian Orthodox Church.\u201d Pe\u0107 was the seat of the Serbian patriarchate from 1346 to 1766, and the Serbian Patriarch is still known today as the Archbishop of Pe\u0107, Metropolitan of Belgrade and Karlovci. Many of the most significant Serbian Orthodox monasteries and churches today are located in Kosovo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"os\" data-enum=\"p5\" data-field=\" paragraph\">\u201cPe\u0107 remains as the history of our past, where patriarchs, archbishops sat, and regardless of what happened, Pe\u0107 remains the historic center of our Church. Everything that contributes to preservation of history, to the attachment of our Church to Pe\u0107 and Kosovo, we accept,\u201d His Holiness stated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"os\" data-enum=\"p6\" data-field=\" paragraph\">However, he does not support the idea of moving patriarchal headquarters to Pe\u0107. \u201cBelgrade is still an administrative center,\u201d the patriarch said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"os\" data-enum=\"p7\" data-field=\" paragraph\">There is also a proposal to change how the patriarch of the Serbian Church is chosen. Whereas the Church primate is currently chosen by a blind selection of one of three envelopes containing the candidates\u2019 names, the Holy Synod could move to election by vote, requiring a two-thirds majority. Pat. Irinej has said that he also does not support this change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"os\" data-enum=\"p8\" data-field=\" paragraph\">\u201cI would personally like it to remain the way it is, this is my opinion, but we will see how the Assembly will decide.
