{"id":195327,"date":"2018-05-30T14:49:38","date_gmt":"2018-05-30T11:49:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/basilica.ro\/?p=195327"},"modified":"2018-05-30T14:52:04","modified_gmt":"2018-05-30T11:52:04","slug":"polish-independence-centennial-celebrated-at-the-new-agia-sophia-orthodox-cathedral","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arhiva.basilica.ro\/en\/polish-independence-centennial-celebrated-at-the-new-agia-sophia-orthodox-cathedral\/","title":{"rendered":"Polish independence centennial celebrated at the new Agia Sophia Orthodox Cathedral"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Only three years after the laying of the foundation stone, the first ever Divine Liturgy was celebrated Saturday, May 19, 2018, within the walls of Warsaw\u2019s new Agia Sophia Orthodox Cathedral, marking the centennial of the regaining of Polish independence in 1918.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As reported by the website of the Polish Orthodox Church, the Divine Liturgy was presided over by His Beatitude Metropolitan Sava of Warsaw and All Poland, with the concelebration of several hierarchs.<\/p>\n<h4>Divine Providence governs the world<\/h4>\n<p>In his homily, Metropolitan Sava said that \u2018standing within the walls of the building of the Holy Church of Agia Sophia\u2014God\u2019s Wisdom\u2014in Warsaw, we realize the truth that Divine Providence governs the world, the Church, and every one of us.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Only it undertakes great works regarding the life of the Church and of every man, at a proper time and in proper circumstances.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Through the Agia Sophia Cathedral,\u2019 the Polish Metropolitan said, \u2018we are united and free unto the glory of God and the remembrance of our fathers, of the city of Warsaw and of Podlasia.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The new Cathedral, whose construction is nearing completion, \u2018will be a beautiful architectural monument of Warsaw.\u2019<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_194446\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-194446\" style=\"width: 890px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/A7_087211.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-194446 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/A7_087211-890x594.jpg\" alt=\"Catedrala Sfanta Sofia Intelepciunea lui Dumnezeu din Varsovia mai 2018\" width=\"890\" height=\"594\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-194446\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Warsaw&#8217;s Agia Sophia &#8211; Wisdom of God Orthodox Cathedral, 19 May 2018. Photo: Jaros\u0142aw Charkiewicz \/ POC<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u2018We will bring our joys and sorrows to the new cathedral, finding in it consolation, strength and a quiet harbor,\u2019 Metropolitan Sava added May 19, 2018.<\/p>\n<p>In his speech, the Primate of the Polish Orthodox Church thanked the workers, donators and supporters of this project.<\/p>\n<h4>Official messages<\/h4>\n<p>Archbishop Job of Telmessos read out the message of His Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew referring to the history of Constantinople\u2019s Great Church of Agia Sophia and to its contribution to the development of Christianity among the Slavs.<\/p>\n<p>Metropolitan Hilarion Alfeyev conveyed greetings on behalf of Patriarch Kirill of Moscow.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018As a good friend and zealous archpastor, you set your powers in the service of Christ the Saviour, giving others the warmth of faith that Your Beatitude\u2019s heart experiences, inspiring the episcopate and the clergy to work diligently the land of God to spread the Word of God (2 Thess. 3:1),\u2019 the Russian Patriarch wrote in his message.<\/p>\n<h4>Blessing of the cross on main dome<\/h4>\n<p>Following the Divine Liturgy, all the participating clergy gathered at the front of the church for the blessing of the cross that was then elevated to the top of the church\u2019s main dome, thus marking a triumphal conclusion to an important day for the clergy and faithful of the Polish Orthodox Church.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_194444\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-194444\" style=\"width: 890px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/A7_086241.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-194444 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/A7_086241-890x594.jpg\" alt=\"Mitropolitul Sava al Poloniei sfintind crucea de pe cupola principala a catedralei din Varsovia\" width=\"890\" height=\"594\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-194444\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Polish Metropolitan Sava blessing the cross of the Agia Sophia Cathedral&#8217;s main dome. Photo: Orthodox.pl<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In an invitation sent two months ago to hierarchs, clergy, and faithful to attend the first Divine Liturgy and the placing of the holy cross on the cathedral\u2019s main dome, Metropolitan Sava noted that the event represented \u2018an eloquent moment on the 100<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the regaining of Poland\u2019s independence.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>It is noteworthy that in a country with a majority Roman-Catholic population, the centennial of regaining independence is marked by the construction of an Orthodox Cathedral.<\/p>\n<h4>Romanian People\u2019s Salvation Cathedral \u2013 Symbol of Romania\u2019s independence<\/h4>\n<p>Similarly, the Cathedral of the People\u2019s Salvation is being built in Romania, a project dating from the Independence War (1877-1878), a spiritual symbol dedicated to all national heroes who have sacrificed themselves for the defense of the homeland and the ancestral faith.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_194447\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-194447\" style=\"width: 890px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Catedrala-Mantuirii-Neamului-20-mai-2018.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-194447 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Catedrala-Mantuirii-Neamului-20-mai-2018-890x668.jpeg\" alt=\"Catedrala Mantuirii Neamului - 20 mai 2018\" width=\"890\" height=\"668\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-194447\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The construction site of Romania&#8217;s National Cathedral, Sunday, 20 May 2018.
