{"id":196911,"date":"2018-06-25T11:46:56","date_gmt":"2018-06-25T08:46:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/basilica.ro\/?p=196911"},"modified":"2018-06-25T11:46:56","modified_gmt":"2018-06-25T08:46:56","slug":"metropolitan-teofan-leads-st-george-the-pilgrims-canonization-ceremony-he-was-a-man-of-pure-prayer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arhiva.basilica.ro\/en\/metropolitan-teofan-leads-st-george-the-pilgrims-canonization-ceremony-he-was-a-man-of-pure-prayer\/","title":{"rendered":"Metropolitan Teofan leads St George the Pilgrim\u2019s canonization ceremony: He was a man of pure prayer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>During the canonization ceremony of Saint George the Pilgrim that took place Saturday, June 22, at Targu Neamt, His Eminence Metropolitan Teofan said that the Romanian lay-ascetic was \u2018a man of pure prayer, a shining diamond, and a mane of pure essence.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The ascetic George Lazar reached dispassion, a state that every Christian should achieve, the Metropolitan noted.<\/p>\n<p>This \u2018genius of holiness\u2019, Metropolitan Teofan said, lived on earth \u2018in the holy atmosphere of the Kingdom of Heaven,\u2019 that is \u2018he lowered the heaven to earth or raised the earth to heaven.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Referring to St George the Pilgrim and other holy ascetics, His Eminence said that \u2018they were sent to earth because we humans have often lost the authentic path of the Gospel.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fdoxologia.ro%2Fvideos%2F2141037692591811%2F&amp;show_text=0&amp;width=560\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4>Local canonization ceremony<\/h4>\n<p>The local proclamation of St George\u2019s canonization took place at the princely St John Church in Piatra Neamt, where St George laboured his spiritual feats in the bell tower of the church from 1895 until the end of his earthly life in 1916.<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony was held after the Great Vespers on a stage next to the St John Church, which was founded by Ruler Prince Saint Stephen the Great.<\/p>\n<p>The services were led by His Eminence Metropolitan Teofan of Moldavia and Bukovina, having as concelebrants Archbishop Teodosie of Tomis, Archbishop Ioachim of Roman and Bacau, Bishop Ignatie of Husi, and Bishop Macarie of Northern Europe.<\/p>\n<p>A reliquary containing a particle of St George\u2019s holy relics was offered to the St John Parish in Targu Neamt.<\/p>\n<p>Following Vespers, His Grace Bishop Ignatie read out the synodal tomos on the canonization of Saint George the Pilgrim.<\/p>\n<p>Then the holy relics of the newly-glorified Saint George were carried in procession on the streets of Targu Neamt.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_196829\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-196829\" style=\"width: 890px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-196829 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Tomos-890x501.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"890\" height=\"501\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-196829\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Episcopul Ignatie citind tomosul de canonizare. Foto credit: Captur\u0103 video Doxologia.ro<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4>Saint George the Pilgrim<\/h4>\n<p>Saint George was born in 1864 in Susag, Alba County. After living 14 years in marriage, with the approval of his wife, he went on a pilgrimage to the Holy Places taking with him the Holy Gospel and the Psalter.<\/p>\n<p>Suffering many temptations from demons, he decided to strengthen his patience and humility by walking barefoot and bareheaded for the rest of his life.<\/p>\n<p>In 1895 he returned to Romania, settling in to a small chamber in the tower bell of St John Church in Piatra Neamt.<\/p>\n<p>He slept only for three hours every night. During the day, he walked barefoot and bareheaded on the streets of the city, incessantly whispering psalms.<\/p>\n<p>The Saint passed away to the Lord on the feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos in 1916, when Romania was entering WWI.<\/p>\n<p>The lay-ascetic George Lazar was glorified by the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church during its working session on 5 October 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Marking the centennial of the Union of Bessarabia with Romania, Patriarch Daniel led a joint canonization ceremony in Ia\u0219i on 25 March 2018, when Metropolitan Joseph Naniescu and lay-ascetic George Laz\u0103r were declared Saints of the Orthodox Church.<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-1' class='gallery galleryid-196911 gallery-columns-3 gallery-size-thumbnail'><figure
