{"id":212470,"date":"2018-10-26T20:01:17","date_gmt":"2018-10-26T17:01:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/basilica.ro\/?p=212470"},"modified":"2018-10-26T20:01:17","modified_gmt":"2018-10-26T17:01:17","slug":"the-oldest-surviving-complete-bible-in-latin-returns-to-england-for-first-time-in-1300-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arhiva.basilica.ro\/en\/the-oldest-surviving-complete-bible-in-latin-returns-to-england-for-first-time-in-1300-years\/","title":{"rendered":"The oldest surviving complete Bible in Latin returns to England for first time in 1,300 years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the early eighth century, three enormous Bibles were produced by monks at Wearmouth-Jarrow Abbey.<\/p>\n<p>Two were to remain in Northumbria, but in 716AD the other was sent, in the care of the then abbot, Ceolfrith, to Rome as a gift for Pope Gregory II.<\/p>\n<p>Only a few fragments remain of the first two; the third, known as the\u00a0Codex Amiatinus\u00a0and described as one of the greatest works in Anglo-Saxon England, has remained in Italy until now.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time in 1,302 years, the oldest surviving complete Bible in Latin has returned to the country of its creation to form the centrepiece of an\u00a0exhibition\u00a0of Anglo-Saxon art, literature, science and politics at the\u00a0British Library\u00a0in London.<\/p>\n<p>Advertised as a \u201conce in a generation\u201d show, the exhibition lived up to its billing, said Dr Clare Breay, the lead curator. \u201cIt\u2019s a phrase that\u2019s sometimes overused, but I think in this case that\u2019s absolutely true.
