{"id":227474,"date":"2019-02-14T12:22:43","date_gmt":"2019-02-14T10:22:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/?p=227474"},"modified":"2019-02-14T21:42:41","modified_gmt":"2019-02-14T19:42:41","slug":"bulgarian-orthodox-church-deletes-opinion-on-national-strategy-for-the-child-from-website","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arhiva.basilica.ro\/en\/bulgarian-orthodox-church-deletes-opinion-on-national-strategy-for-the-child-from-website\/","title":{"rendered":"Bulgarian Orthodox Church deletes opinion on National Strategy for the Child from website"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>A controversial opinion purported to be from the Bulgarian Orthodox Church\u2019s Holy Synod urging a ban on terminations of pregnancy, for religion to be a compulsory subject in schools, no sex education, and opposing the full ban on corporal punishment in schools, has been deleted from the church\u2019s official website, Sofia Globe <a href=\"https:\/\/sofiaglobe.com\/2019\/02\/12\/bulgarian-orthodox-church-deletes-controversial-opinion-on-national-strategy-for-the-child-from-website\/\">reports<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/en\/bulgarian-orthodox-church-calls-for-abortion-ban-compulsory-religion-in-schools-no-sex-education\/\">opinion<\/a>, posted in response to the Bulgarian government\u2019s draft National Strategy for the Child 2019-2030, had not been voted by the Holy Synod, nor approved by the church\u2019s Patriarch Neofit, nor signed by the Metropolitans, Bulgarian National Television (BNT) reported.<\/p>\n<p>It had been sent for posting on the website by Gavriil, the Metropolitan of Lovech, BNT said.<\/p>\n<p>After it appeared on the website on February 8, the opinion \u2013 widely covered in the Bulgarian media \u2013 caused an extensive negative reaction on social networks.<\/p>\n<p>Specialist church news website Dveri said that the opinion had not been considered and approved by the Bulgarian Orthodox Church\u2019s governing body, but was an initiative of the Synod\u2019s cultural and educational department headed by Metropolitan Gavriil.<\/p>\n<p>Dveri quoted a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/474347232666828\/posts\/1763403637094508\/\">statement<\/a> by Naum, the Metropolitan of Rousse, who said that the document had not been officially discussed by the Holy Synod.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe \u2018opinion\u2019 binding the Bulgarian Orthodox Church Holy Synod as an institution was a project personally created by Ms. Dessislava Panayotova, an associate of the cultural and education department of the Synodal office\u2026that does not mean that the Holy Synod will accept it unhesitatingly and unambiguously,\u201d Naum said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Bulgarian Orthodox Church, as a nutritionist of Bulgarians and moral values in the Bulgarian family, always will promote ethical norms in education, but will not tolerate in any way violence against children, in whatever form, especially if it is linked to so-called \u2018religious education and training\u2019,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Issues related to the termination of pregnancy and children at risk are issues for future profound reflection in Bulgarian society \u201caddressing appropriate reflections on God\u2019s will, the dignity of the mother, as well as the significance of each specific case, related to domestic violence and violence specifically against women,\u201d Naum\u2019s statement said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll other topics concerning the education and upbringing of Bulgarian children should be discussed by relevant educators and specialists, who also have the view of theological science, thus defining the most accurate and correct approach for future recommendations on the issues raised,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>Photo courtesy of Genius Journey<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A controversial opinion purported to be from the Bulgarian Orthodox Church\u2019s Holy Synod urging a ban on terminations of pregnancy, for religion to be a compulsory subject in schools, no sex education, and opposing the full ban on corporal punishment in schools, has been deleted from the church\u2019s official website, Sofia Globe reports.
