{"id":249241,"date":"2019-08-26T13:17:12","date_gmt":"2019-08-26T10:17:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/?p=249241"},"modified":"2019-08-26T13:19:02","modified_gmt":"2019-08-26T10:19:02","slug":"how-many-orthodox-bishops-are-in-the-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arhiva.basilica.ro\/en\/how-many-orthodox-bishops-are-in-the-world\/","title":{"rendered":"How many Orthodox bishops are in the world?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>There are 941 canonical Orthodox bishops in the world, The Society for Orthodox Christian History in the Americas <a href=\"https:\/\/orthodoxhistory.org\/2019\/08\/22\/how-many-orthodox-bishops-are-in-the-world\/\">reports<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The figures were published by Matthew Namee who wrote that compared to the time of the First Ecumenical Council, there were a reported 1,800 bishops in the world \u2014 about 1,000 in the East and 800 in the West for a much smaller population of Christians.<\/p>\n<p>Today there is an Orthodox bishop for every 236,000 Christians. That\u2019s a big change from the time of Nicaea, when the ratio was somewhere between 5,000 and 20,000 to one.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_248933\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-248933\" style=\"width: 890px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-248933 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/active-orthodox-bishops-in-2019-890x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"890\" height=\"600\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-248933\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: orthodoxhistory.org<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The largest share of the world\u2019s bishops, by far, belongs to the Moscow Patriarchate, at 40% \u2014 377 bishops.
