{"id":261644,"date":"2019-11-26T10:51:48","date_gmt":"2019-11-26T08:51:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/?p=261644"},"modified":"2019-11-26T10:51:48","modified_gmt":"2019-11-26T08:51:48","slug":"remembering-the-historic-consecration-ceremony-of-the-national-cathedral-in-bucharest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arhiva.basilica.ro\/en\/remembering-the-historic-consecration-ceremony-of-the-national-cathedral-in-bucharest\/","title":{"rendered":"Remembering the historic consecration ceremony of the National Cathedral in Bucharest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>On Monday, November 25, 2019, we marked one year since the historic <a href=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/en\/consecration-ceremony-of-romania-national-cathedral\/\">consecration<\/a> of the Romanian People\u2019s Salvation Cathedral, the most important national project dedicated to Romania\u2019s Great Union Centennial, a symbol of the unity of faith and of nation of Romanians.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Although the Cathedral was consecrated as \u2018shell and core,\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/en\/national-cathedral-consecration-attendance-statistics\/\">over 150,000 Romanians<\/a> came to visit it and to venerate the church altar. <a href=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/en\/pope-francis-visits-romanias-national-cathedral\/\">Pope Francis too was a pilgrim<\/a> to the National Cathedral during his official visit to Romania last May. Like all other great cathedrals in the world, the edifice will bring to light Romania as a state and Orthodoxy as the value of the continuation of the Romanian people, despite all the trials faced throughout history.<\/p>\n<p>The Cathedral has two patronal feasts, the Ascension of the Lord (Heroes\u2019 Day) and Saint Andrew the First-Called, Protector of Romania.<\/p>\n<p>The historical event of the consecration began with the dedication of the Cathedral to all those who have sacrificed their lives for Romania\u2019s national and spiritual unity.<\/p>\n<p>During a solemn ceremony held on Saturday, November 24, 2018, the Patriarch of Romania made a gesture of liturgical and patriotic value and placed at the foot of the altar table a list containing over 350,000 names of Romanian heroes and prayed for their souls.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_217294\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-217294\" style=\"width: 890px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-217294 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Parastas_CMN09-1-890x593.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"890\" height=\"593\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-217294\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Patriarch Daniel censing during the first ever service held for the Romanian heroes at the National Cathedral, 24.11.2018. \u00a9 Basilica.ro<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The consecration of the over 100 years old national desire became reality on Sunday, November 25, 2019. The ceremony was officiated by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and Patriarch Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>Sixty hierarchs, thousands of clerics, many local and central authorities attended the event. A total of over 50,000 people were present, 2,000 of which inside the Cathedral.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_217439\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-217439\" style=\"width: 890px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-217439 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Sfintire-si-prima-liturghie-la-Catedrala-Mantuirii-Neamului-1-890x593.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"890\" height=\"593\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-217439\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and Romanian Patriarch Daniel entering the National Cathedral, 25.11.2018. \u00a9 Basilica.ro<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>His Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople expressed his appreciation over the sacrifice and steadfastness of Romanians in carrying out this national project, about which many said it was impossible. At the same time, the Patriarch of Constantinople noted that the Cathedral was dedicated to Saint Andrew who is a patron saint of both the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the Romanian Patriarchate.<\/p>\n<p>Five days after the consecration ceremony, Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem came to Romania to celebrate the Divine Liturgy for the patronal feast of the National Cathedral together with Patriarch Daniel.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_218713\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-218713\" style=\"width: 890px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-218713 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_3248-890x593.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"890\" height=\"593\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-218713\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Patriarch Theophilos of Jerusalem blessing the congregation during the first patronal feast of the National Cathedral in Bucharest, 30.11.2018. \u00a9 Basilica.ro<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Due to the large number of pilgrims, the visit program initially announced to end on November 29 was extended until December 2.<\/p>\n<p>After December 2, 2018, the application of mosaic iconography was resumed, the turrets were covered with copper plate and the works at the spaces outside the building, as well as at the adjacent basements, started.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_261542\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-261542\" style=\"width: 890px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-261542 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/2019.11.09_acoperire_turla_Pantocrator_si_lucrari_cladiri_adiacente_139-890x593.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"890\" height=\"593\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-261542\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This is how the Romanian People&#8217;s Salvation Cathedral looks like in November 2019. \u00a9 catedralaneamului.ro<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This national project in which 110 million euros were invested until 2019 was carried out by the Romanian Orthodox Church in parallel with a large social work materialized in the last decade through expenses of more than 150 million euros in its more than 700 social centres.<\/p>\n<p>The idea of a National Cathedral in Romania dates back to 1884, when King Carol I promulgated the Law of the Cathedral Church, a law never repealed, but which was implemented only after 126 years.
