{"id":269075,"date":"2020-01-21T15:53:36","date_gmt":"2020-01-21T13:53:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/?p=269075"},"modified":"2020-01-21T17:10:04","modified_gmt":"2020-01-21T15:10:04","slug":"remains-of-first-byzantine-monastery-of-iberian-peninsula-identified-in-spain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arhiva.basilica.ro\/en\/remains-of-first-byzantine-monastery-of-iberian-peninsula-identified-in-spain\/","title":{"rendered":"Remains of first byzantine monastery of Iberian Peninsula identified in Spain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Previously thought to be a Roman or Visigothic site on a hill on the outskirts of Elda in the Alicante province of Spain, experts from the University of Alicante and the local archaeological museum have confirmed that the remains of a Christian monastery discovered in the 1980s are in fact those of a Byzantine monastery, <a href=\"https:\/\/orthochristian.com\/127205.html\">Orthochristian<\/a> reports.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"RO\">The research lasted almost 25 years \u201cdue to the difficulties of identifying the architectural remains and liturgical utensils found,\u201d explains Antonio Manuel Poveda, a professor of ancient history and director of the museum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"RO\">In addition to a small set of weights with inscriptions in Greek found earlier, the most recent excavations, led by Poveda, unearthed a large octagonal column, typical of Byzantine architecture.
