{"id":271099,"date":"2020-02-11T14:33:16","date_gmt":"2020-02-11T12:33:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/?p=271099"},"modified":"2020-02-11T14:33:16","modified_gmt":"2020-02-11T12:33:16","slug":"patriarch-daniel-at-beginning-of-triodion-not-every-prayer-is-received-by-god","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arhiva.basilica.ro\/en\/patriarch-daniel-at-beginning-of-triodion-not-every-prayer-is-received-by-god\/","title":{"rendered":"Patriarch Daniel at beginning of Triodion: Not every prayer is received by God"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">During his homily marking the beginning of the Triodion, His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel said that the Sunday of the Publican and the Pharisee is an appeal to humble prayer.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>Offer prayers with humility<\/h4>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u2018Not every prayer is received by God, only the humble prayer, offered in humility,\u2019 the Patriarch of Romania stressed quoting the Gospel of Luke saying that \u2018all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In other words, the prayer that exalts is offered with humility by recognizing our limitations and mistakes. But the prayer that prevents us from approaching God and injures us spiritually is a prayer offered with pride, self-praise and over-appreciation, the Patriarch noted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">On the first Sunday of the Triodion, February 9, His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel attended the Divine Liturgy celebrated at the St Gregory the Enlightener Chapel of his patriarchal residence.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Prayer of repentance<\/h4>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The prayer of repentance is \u201ca spiritual work of the soul and the body at the same time,\u201d the Patriarch said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cFollowing the example of the sinful, but humble Publican, during the Lenten season, we Christians do many prostrations, bending our eyes and body to the earth, as a sign of humility and repentance, recognizing that sin draws us to the earth and death. But God\u2019s mercy or grace and His forgiveness lift us to the heavenly things, that is, to the light of eternal life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Righteous and proud vs. sinful but humble<\/h4>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Patriarch stressed that the gospel passage reflects that the Pharisee was a righteous but proud man, while the Publican was a sinful but humble man.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThe first conclusion we can draw when hearing this gospel reading is that God prefers a humble sinner to a proud righteous man,\u201d the Patriarch said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cHowever,\u201d Patriarch Daniel went on saying, the hymns of the Triodion referring to this Sunday\u2019s Gospel \u201clet us understand that God\u2019s preference for humility does not mean the approval of the sins of the publican or the disregard of the good deeds of the Pharisee.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cFor this reason, the Book of the Triodion urges us to imitate the Pharisee\u2019s virtues or good deeds, and, at the same time, to cultivate the Publican\u2019s humility. Therefore, the Church urges us, at the same time, to good deeds and humility.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel listed the four Sundays of the Pre-Lenten period, noting that they correspond to four virtues: \u2018humble prayer, sincere repentance, generous mercy, and fasting or self-control.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Prayer for a humble prayer<\/h4>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Patriarch ended his sermon with a prayer so that the first Sunday of the Triodion will be \u2018a good start for humble prayer, which includes the prayer for all people because God wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Photography courtesy of the<\/span><strong> Basilica.ro Archive<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Follow us on Twitter: @BasilicaNews<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>During his homily marking the beginning of the Triodion, His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel said that the Sunday of the Publican and the Pharisee is an appeal to humble prayer.
