His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel celebrates on 4 March 2020 his 30th\u00a0<\/sup>anniversary of episcopal consecration.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Elected on 12 February 1990 as Assistant Bishop to the Archdiocese of Timi\u015foara, with the title of Lugojanul, on 4 March 1990 he was ordained hierarch at the Metropolitan Cathedral.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Patriarch Daniel, the sixth leader of the Romanian Orthodox Church, was born on 22 July 1951, in Dobre\u015fti village, Bara commune, Timi\u015f County, as the third child of teacher Alexie and his wife Stela Ciobotea.<\/p>\n

Between 1974 and 1976 he attended PhD courses at the Orthodox Theological Institute in Bucharest, under the guidance of Rev. Prof. Dumitru St\u0103niloae. He continued his studies abroad at the Faculty of Protestant Theology, University of Human Sciences in Strasbourg, France, and at Albert Ludwig University in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany.<\/p>\n

On 15 June 1979. He defended his doctoral thesis at the University of Strasbourg, entitled: R\u00e9flexion et vie chr\u00e9tiennes aujourd\u2019hui. Essai sur le rapport entre la th\u00e9ologie et la spiritualit\u00e9. The thesis was prepared under the guidance of two famous French Professors: Gerard Ziegwald and Andr\u00e9 Beno\u00eet.<\/p>\n

In 1987, he entered the monastic life at the Sih\u0103stria Monastery, Neam\u0163 County, receiving the name of\u00a0Daniel,\u00a0<\/em>under the mantle of Elder Cleopas Ilie. He was ordained into the deaconate on 14 August 1987, and into priesthood the next day.<\/p>\n

On 4 March 1990, he was consecrated Assistant Bishop to the Archdiocese of Timi\u015foara, with the title\u00a0of Lugoj.<\/em>\u00a0On 7 June 1990, he was elected Archbishop of Ia\u015fi and Metropolitan of Moldavia and Bukovina. His enthronement ceremony was held the next month.<\/p>\n

On 12 September 2007, the Church Electoral College elected Metropolitan Daniel as Archbishop of Bucharest, Metropolitan of Muntenia and Dobrudja, Locum Tenens of the Throne of Caesarea in Cappadocia, and Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church. His Beatitude\u2019s enthronement ceremony took place Sunday, 30 September 2007, on the feast of Hieromartyr Saint Gregory the Enlightener of Greater Armenia, at the Patriarchal Cathedral in Bucharest.<\/p>\n

Even many could call him maybe superficially The Patriarch of the National Cathedral, there are many other \u201ccathedrals\u201d built under the Patriarch\u2019s guidance, even though they are not publicized to the same extent.<\/p>\n

It is obvious that the construction of the Romanian People\u2019s Salvation Cathedral, the national ideal His Beatitude received from his predecessors, is a landmark among Patriarch Daniel\u2019s achievements.<\/p>\n

The new Orthodox Cathedral is actually the crown of tens of other major projects including the canonization of 33 Romanian Saints, the establishment of four dioceses for Romanians abroad, investing over 200 million euros in social and philanthropic activities, the establishment of the Basilica Media Centre and many more.<\/p>\n

Beyond his national contribution, Patriarch Daniel\u2019s outstanding theological and ecclesiastical views were made manifest during the Holy and Great Council of Crete where he supported the principle of conciliarity as a canonical norm at a pan-Orthodox level.<\/p>\n
