{"id":280817,"date":"2020-05-26T10:36:24","date_gmt":"2020-05-26T07:36:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/?p=280817"},"modified":"2020-05-26T10:36:48","modified_gmt":"2020-05-26T07:36:48","slug":"husi-diocese-issues-press-release-on-the-case-of-former-bishop-corneliu-onila","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arhiva.basilica.ro\/en\/husi-diocese-issues-press-release-on-the-case-of-former-bishop-corneliu-onila\/","title":{"rendered":"Hu\u0219i Diocese issues press release on the case of former bishop Corneliu Onil\u0103"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>A former bishop of the Romanian Orthodox Church was held for 30 days after the prosecutors have charged him with sexual abuse on a former student of his at the Orthodox theological seminary in Hu\u0219i, Eastern Romania, where he used to work as a professor.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The former bishop of Hu\u0219i, Corneliu Onil\u0103, held this dignity from 2009 until 2017 when he <a href=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/en\/decisions-of-the-holy-synod-regarding-the-diocese-of-husi\/\">stepped down<\/a> after being involved in a sex scandal.<\/p>\n<p>The Diocese of Hu\u0219i issued a press release on Friday, May 22, 2020, saying that it took note of his detention and of the juridical-criminal nature of the former bishop\u2019s deeds calling them \u2018acts of great gravity, which are meant to disturb anyone in all aspects.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The case, being of a criminal nature, belongs to the competent bodies of the State, while the Diocese of Hu\u0219i, not being able to replace them, is waiting for the completion of the court case,\u2019 the press release reads.<\/p>\n<p>After an \u2018indisputable decision\u2019 will be issued for the case, the church regulations will also be applied, the diocese\u2019s representatives wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The diocesan press office noted that the diocese of Hu\u0219i no longer had \u2018any canonical connection\u2019 with the former bishop Corneliu Onil\u0103.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We regret the offence generated by this case, as well as the moral implications that do no honour to anyone, all the less so as they are linked to the image of a church servant, who must be an example of morality par excellence.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018No institution, however, can be confused with a person,\u2019 the press release clarifies. \u2018Mechanisms to combat criminal offences must work, regardless of the person concerned.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The believers were urged \u2018not to let this unfortunate case upset them more than it has done so far.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Until a final decision, the diocese will no further develop this topic.<\/p>\n<p>Photography: Diocese of Hu\u0219i<\/p>\n<p>Follow us on Twitter: @BasilicaNews<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A former bishop of the Romanian Orthodox Church was held for 30 days after the prosecutors have charged him with sexual abuse on a former student of his at the Orthodox theological seminary in Hu\u0219i, Eastern Romania, where he used to work as a professor.
