{"id":292433,"date":"2020-09-24T16:06:48","date_gmt":"2020-09-24T13:06:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/?p=292433"},"modified":"2020-09-24T16:06:48","modified_gmt":"2020-09-24T13:06:48","slug":"polish-orthodox-church-consecrates-warsaws-agia-sophia-cathedral","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arhiva.basilica.ro\/en\/polish-orthodox-church-consecrates-warsaws-agia-sophia-cathedral\/","title":{"rendered":"Polish Orthodox Church consecrates Warsaw\u2019s Agia Sophia Cathedral"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-enum=\"p1\" data-field=\" paragraph\"><strong>Nearly five years after its foundation stone was laid, the Agia Sophia Cathedral in Warsaw was festively consecrated on the eve of the feast of the Nativity of the Most-Holy Theotokos.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-enum=\"p4\" data-field=\" paragraph\">The new cathedral, based on the iconic Agia Sophia Cathedral in Istanbul, is the first Orthodox church to be built in Warsaw in a century and is the third active Orthodox parish in the capital. Sunday\u2019s Liturgy was the second to be served there, the first having been served in May 2018, less than three years after the\u00a0blessing and laying\u00a0of the church\u2019s foundation stone by Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople and Metropolitan Sava of Warsaw on December 5, 2015.<\/p>\n<p data-enum=\"p5\" data-field=\" paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: inherit;\">Sunday\u2019s celebration began with a procession into the cathedral headed by Met. Sawa together with 9 other hierarchs of the Polish Church. The cathedral was filled with believers from all over Poland. The hierarchs then blessed Holy Water and blessed the entire cathedral with it, reports the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.orthodox.pl\/historyczne-uroczystosci-w-warszawie\/\">Polish Orthodox Church<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-enum=\"p7\" data-field=\" paragraph\">The head of the Polish Church expressed his thanks to the Holy Trinity, and spoke of the Liturgy that would be served in the new church from then on. Previously, the faithful gathered in a temporary wooden church built nearby.<\/p>\n<p data-enum=\"p8\" data-field=\" paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: inherit;\">\u201cIt is the Liturgy,\u201d he said, \u201cthat sanctifies man and the world around him, and unites him with God and others. It also unites us with our ancestors, who sacrificed their sweat and blood on the altar of holy Orthodox, for a free homeland, starting from the 16th century through the First and Second World Wars, deportations, exiles, resettlement, Operation Vistula, camps, and labor camps like Sibir, Katyn, Miednoje, Telerhof, O\u015bwi\u0119cim, Dachau Gross Rosen, Ravensbr\u0171k, Mauthausen, the demolition of the church, or the Warsaw Uprising, in which the clergy of Warsaw, the faithful, young people and children were killed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-enum=\"p10\" data-field=\" paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: inherit;\">His Beatitude also emphasized that the Warsaw Agia Sophia is based on the architectural gem in Istanbul and expressed the pain felt by all Christians over its recent conversion into a mosque. \u201cLet us reflect on the fact that, in accordance with God\u2019s will, we, here in Warsaw, in the center of Europe, are putting to use, in Church life, a copy of this magnificent building of Constantinople,\u201d Met. Sawa said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-enum=\"p10\" data-field=\" paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/JCH06041-890x593-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-292436\" src=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/JCH06041-890x593-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"890\" height=\"593\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-enum=\"p12\" data-field=\" paragraph\">Archbishop Jerzy of Wroc\u0142awsko-Szczeci\u0144ska preached after the Gospel reading, referring to the feast of the Nativity of the Mother of God and the importance of the new cathedral. His Eminence recalled that the capsule laid together with the foundation stone of the cathedral contained earth covered with the blood of innocent orphans who were murdered in the 1944 Wola massacre. \u201cTheir blood is connected today with the blood of the holy martyrs of our Church,\u201d Abp. Jerzy said.<\/p>\n<p data-enum=\"p13\" data-field=\" paragraph\">\u201cHuman memory is not infallible,\u201d he continued. \u201cThe only sure recipe for eternal Remembrance is prayer. And where else, if not in the church, is the best place to transmit this memory from generation to generation and to sustain it until the end of the ages?\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-enum=\"p14\" data-field=\" paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: inherit;\">The Liturgy was followed by a procession around the church, after which Met. Sawa thanked all donors and all those who contributed to the construction of the cathedral, as well as all those who came to pray on the day of its consecration. He also offered a set of liturgical utensils to the church.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-enum=\"p16\" data-field=\" paragraph\">The celebration culminated in the singing of a Te Deum, followed by a communal meal prepared for all the faithful.<\/p>\n<p data-enum=\"p16\" data-field=\" paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/seAk9kpTURBXy9jNzcyNmQyZGEwNGJlZDkyODNiZmUzYWQwNTYyMmM0ZS5qcGeSlQPNAdzMzM0Wfs0MqJMFzQSwzQJ0gqEwAaExAQ-890x466-1.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-292438\" src=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/seAk9kpTURBXy9jNzcyNmQyZGEwNGJlZDkyODNiZmUzYWQwNTYyMmM0ZS5qcGeSlQPNAdzMzM0Wfs0MqJMFzQSwzQJ0gqEwAaExAQ-890x466-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"890\" height=\"466\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-enum=\"p17\" data-field=\" paragraph\">Work on the interior of the cathedral is still underway and is expected to be completed next spring. The cathedral was built entirely with funds collected from parishioner donations, reports <a href=\"https:\/\/tass.ru\/obschestvo\/9503747\">TASS<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-enum=\"p18\" data-field=\" paragraph\">There are about 30-40,000 Orthodox believers in Warsaw, who until now had only two active churches: the Cathedral of St. Mary Magdalene, built-in 1867-1869, and the Church of St. John Climacus, built-in 1905.
