{"id":293327,"date":"2020-10-02T17:07:59","date_gmt":"2020-10-02T14:07:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/?p=293327"},"modified":"2020-10-02T17:07:59","modified_gmt":"2020-10-02T14:07:59","slug":"the-curch-submerged-under-the-iznik-lake-becomes-more-visible-after-water-level-drops","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arhiva.basilica.ro\/en\/the-curch-submerged-under-the-iznik-lake-becomes-more-visible-after-water-level-drops\/","title":{"rendered":"The curch submerged under the Iznik Lake becomes more visible after water level drops"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The remains of a 1,500-year-old church dedicated to St Neophytos have become more visible after the water level of the Iznik Lake in Turkey dropped. <em>Greek Reporter<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/eu.greekreporter.com\/2020\/09\/21\/ancient-church-discovered-under-turkish-lake\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">quotes<\/a> <em>Daily Sabah<\/em>, announcing that draught and pollution reduction have contributed to a better sight of the ruins, now situated only 1.5-2 meters below water level.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The building dates back to the 4th-5th centuries and it was discovered by accident in 2014, while aerial photos of the Iznik Lake were being taken on the site of the ancient city of Nicea, where the First Ecumenical Synod was organized.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>\u201cI did not believe my eyes when I saw it under the helicopter. I thought to myself, \u2018How did nobody notice these ruins before?\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">\u2014 Archaeologist Mustafa \u015eahin, Uluda\u011f\u00a0University, in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/news\/11822988\/ruined-basilica-hidden-under-a-lake-in-turkey-for-1600-years-reappears-as-pollution-clears-in-coronavirus-lockdown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The Sun<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The ruins are approximately 20 meters from the lake bank. Scientists believe the church was submerged after an earthquake which happened in year 740.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jUwCG20dIMI\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Several artefacts were discovered during the archaeological excavations in 2015, with the goal of turning the ruins into an underwater museum.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Mustafa \u015eahin says the church was dedicated to St Neophytos, being built on the place of his martyrdom.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_292366\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-292366\" style=\"width: 890px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-292366 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/ruined-basilica-hidden-under-a-lake-in-turkey-for-1600-years-reappears-as-pollution-clears-in-coronavirus-lockdown-1000x600-1-890x534.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"890\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-292366\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The ruins of the church under Lake Iznik in Turkey.
