The festival features exclusively films made by Orthodox directors and has two main sections: short and feature-length films.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s themes are isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic, monastic life, mental health, culture, reconciliation after the war, climate change and crimes against humanity.<\/p>\n<p>The films competing in the festival come from Romania, Greece, USA, France, Lebanon, Australia, Serbia, Russia, Jamaica and New Zeeland.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/aIuh1QSCQsI\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The short-length films can be watched for free on the festival\u2019s Youtube channel.<\/p>\n<p>The feature-length films can be watched for a fee on the Vimeo channel of Byzanfest, only during the festival.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_293663\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-293663\" style=\"width: 890px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-293663 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/FEATURE_letting-in-the-light-890x501.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"890\" height=\"501\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-293663\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201cLetting in the Light\u201d is a documentary about Sister Thekla, an iconographer from Congo who is painting the Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Wellington, New Zeeland. Photo: Byzanfest (screenshot)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Romanian and international documentaries<\/h3>\n<p>There are two short films from Romania in the festival: \u201cSearching for Happiness\u201d, directed by Dinu Cristian, about the pro-life orphanage established in Valea Plopului by Father Nicolae T\u0103nase, and \u201c500\u201d, a psychological drama directed by Bogdan Albu.<\/p>\n<p>Another short film in the competition is \u201cOrthodoxy in the Shadows of Communism\u201d, directed by Andrei Russo (Canada).<\/p>\n<p>The feature-length section includes a documentary series on pregnancy crisis: \u201cIn the name of choice\u201d (USA) presents stories of women pressured to abort against their will &#8211; by their circumstances or even by the people around them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cScience and Orthodoxy around the world\u201d (Greece) has been nominated for Best Documentary at the festival. The film is about the contribution of Orthodoxy to the dialogue between science and faith.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-293665\" src=\"http:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/FEATURE_science-and-orthodoxy-poster.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"565\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/faceofgodfilm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cThe Face of God\u201d<\/a> (USA), about the view of the Orthodox Church on climate change, has been nominated for Best Documentary and Best Director. The director is <a href=\"https:\/\/faceofgodfilm.com\/film-team\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Father Kaleeg Hainsworth<\/a>, an Orthodox priest from Canada.<\/p>\n<h3>Mission: to promote spiritual beauty<\/h3>\n<p>The festival aims to promote the beauty of Orthodoxy to a worldwide audience.<\/p>\n<p>Byzanfest is an initiative of Transfigure Media, an organization coordinated by Chris Vlahonasios, an Orthodox faithful from Melbourne, Australia.<\/p>\n<p>He chose the name of the festival to honour the legacy of the Byzantine Empire, the longest empire in history, which lasted over a millennium.
