President Klaus Iohannis promulgated the law by which the city of Dragomire\u015fti in Maramure\u015f County was declared a “martyr city” of the anti-communist struggle, the presidency announced<\/a> on Nov. 13.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Senate adopted the bill<\/a>, as the first forum notified, on April 23, the Chamber of Deputies voted decisively on October 20.<\/p>\n

“As a sign of homage to the members of the anti-communist resistance group in \u0162ible\u015f Mountains and as a relief for the descendants of those who fought against the atheist communist regime, the city of Dragomire\u015fti, Maramure\u015f County, is declared a Martyr City of the anti-communist struggle.”<\/p>\n

The measures taken against the resistance group were harsh, with over 150 people arrested in Dragomire\u015fti. Torment and years of imprisonment for those who opposed the communist regime followed.<\/p>\n

Among the victims was Chi\u015f Ion, a student of Orthodox Theology.<\/p>\n

The bill refers to the “supreme price” paid by the Orthodox Monastery of Dragomire\u015fti located in the Prihodi\u015ftii Valley, which was “set on fire by security troops disguised as peasants in winter clothes from Mara Valley, (completely different from the peasants clothing from Dragomire\u015fti) on the night of 13 to 14 September 1949.”<\/p>\n

“Only a censer and the Icon of the Mother of God with the Baby Jesus were recovered from the ashes, these two relics being the basis for the reconstruction at this moment of St. Elijah\u2019s Monastery in Dragomire\u015fti.”<\/p>\n
