That powerful experience stayed with me, but I could not have known that it would lead me on a journey that would lead to me becoming a member of the Romanian church,\u201d Paul Kingsnorth told <a href=\"http:\/\/basilica.ro\/en\">Basilica.ro<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He was baptized on the Epiphany day by his spiritual advisor, Father Tudor Ghi\u021b\u0103, the parish priest of the Romanian community in Galway.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI felt both joyful and peaceful afterwards\u2026 and cold! But a stronger sense that I had arrived somewhere I was meant to be. My receipt into the church has been a great privilege, and the [Romanian] community here in Ireland has been so welcoming to me and my family,\u201d confessed the writer.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_307645\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-307645\" style=\"width: 890px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-307645 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG-20210106-WA0089-890x501.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"890\" height=\"501\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-307645\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Father Tudor Ghi\u021b\u0103<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Father Tudor Ghi\u021b\u0103 told he never tried to convert the writer. They met at the Romanian Orthodox Monastery of Shannonbridge, Ireland, and had some long talks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was determined to enter Orthodoxy, but I advised him to moderate his enthusiasm and not to expect to see angels flying through the church,\u201d said the Romanian parish priest of Galway.<\/p>\n<p>He wanted to make the writer understand that being a Christian is permanent work and the joy you feel is supposed to be one of a spiritual nature.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is an obedient spiritual son,\u201d Father Tudor Ghi\u021b\u0103 added. \u201cHe observes the fasting days, reads the recommended prayers and makes full prostrations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even though he had many spiritual searches, Paul Kingsnorth had never been baptized in another Christian denomination. His previous searches took him towards Oriental religions and neopaganism.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIn 2020, as the world was turned upside down, so was I. Unexpectedly, and initially against my will, I found myself being pulled determinedly towards Christianity,\u201d he recounted. \u201cI started the year as an eclectic eco-pagan with a long-held, unformed ache in my heart, and ended it a practicing Christian.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Then the ache was \u201cgone and replaced by the thing that, all along, I turned out to have been looking for,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn January 2021 I was baptised and received into the Eastern Orthodox Church. I don\u2019t know where the path leads from here, but at last I know how to walk it.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Call cards<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_307639\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-307639\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-307639\" src=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/baptized.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"711\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-307639\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Paul Kingsnorth<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Paul Kingsnorth<\/strong> (photo above, after the baptism) is 49 and has lived for several years in the rural parts of Galway, Ireland. He runs a family farm which he works by using traditional methods, such as cutting hay with a scythe, just like Romanian peasants did formerly.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>He wrote visionary fiction books and essays on the environment. Between 2009 and 2017, he established an environmental activism project entitled Dark Mountain. But he says he has never been a Marxist materialist, like many other members of this movement.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cI have never been a scientific materialist. My suspicion that there is more to the world than modernity will allow for has informed my sensibility since I was a child, and was the backdrop to all my environmental activism and writing,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theamericanconservative.com\/dreher\/paul-kingsnorth-orthodoxy-dark-chamber-baptism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he wrote<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Conservative writer Rod Dreher <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/roddreher\/status\/1358271759666003969\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">describes<\/a> him as \u201cone of the most talented and visionary writers of our time\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Journalist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/the-black-pilled-laureate-of-modern-britain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aris Roussinos<\/a> calls him a \u201cprofoundly religious\u201d author and \u201cEngland&#8217;s greatest living writer\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_307641\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-307641\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-307641\" src=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/12458985_10207325604431085_1464526644_o-1-890x890.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-307641\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Father Tudor Ghi\u021b\u0103<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>P\u0103rintele Paroh Tudor Ghi\u021b\u0103<\/strong> (photo above) is from C\u00e2mpulung Moldovenesc, in northeastern Romania, where he ordered the mobile iconostasis sculpted in linden-tree wood for the \u201cSt Nicholas and St Brigitte of Kildare\u201d Church in Galway. He can install it anywhere in 20 minutes.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>He initially prepared for exact sciences, not for Theology. \u201cBut God knows His works,\u201d he says.<\/li>\n<li>He is shepherding Ireland&#8217;s biggest Romanian Orthodox around the feast of Epiphany, he can drive over 1,500 miles.<\/li>\n<li>The Romanian parish priest is grateful to the representatives of the Anglican Church
