{"id":323697,"date":"2021-06-28T16:06:55","date_gmt":"2021-06-28T13:06:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/?p=323697"},"modified":"2021-06-28T16:06:55","modified_gmt":"2021-06-28T13:06:55","slug":"romanian-patriarchates-representation-to-eu-matic-report-amplifies-rifts-in-todays-europe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arhiva.basilica.ro\/en\/romanian-patriarchates-representation-to-eu-matic-report-amplifies-rifts-in-todays-europe\/","title":{"rendered":"Romanian Patriarchate&#8217;s Representation to EU: Mati\u0107 Report amplifies rifts in today&#8217;s Europe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Representation of the Romanian Orthodox Church to the European Institutions <a href=\"https:\/\/www.romorth.eu\/single-post\/controversial-report-voted-by-the-ep\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">transmitted<\/a> that the Mati\u0107 Report amplifies division in today&#8217;s Europe on issues that, according to the founding treaty of the Union, should be regulated exclusively by each member state.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In stark contrast to the <em>Treaty on the Functioning of the EU<\/em>, which clearly stipulates that areas such as health and education fall exclusively within the competence of the Member States, the Matic Report seeks to create the impression of a global consensus on topics which, in reality, remain extremely sensitive within the family of EU Member States,&#8221; states a release on the website of the Romanian Patriarchate&#8217;s Representation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Representation of the Romanian Orthodox Church to the European Institutions notes with regret this result, a sign of an increasing trend to replace, at European level, a genuine policy of promoting the fundamental rights of citizens &#8211; such as the right to life, freedom of conscience or parental rights &#8211; with shocking ideologies that ignore real needs and problems, while amplifying the rifts between people, cultures and states in today&#8217;s Europe.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There was a hot debate on the draft report at the European Parliament&#8217;s Committee on Women&#8217;s Rights and Gender Equality (FEMM), where, according to the representatives of the Romanian Orthodox Church, &#8220;many civil society representatives pointed to the stark contrast between the noble general intention of the report and the many controversial issues that fall outside the EU&#8217;s areas of competence.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/doceo\/document\/A-9-2021-0169_EN.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Mati\u0107 Report<\/a> was adopted on Thursday in the European Parliament. Its controversial aspects are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>promotion of abortion;<\/li>\n<li>criticism of the right of health professionals to invoke conscientious objection;<\/li>\n<li>promotion of compulsory sex education for children, starting in primary education;<\/li>\n<li>promotion of gender ideology (which pretends that gender is a choice, not a given reality in accordance with biological sex).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.romorth.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Representation<\/a> of the Romanian Orthodox Church to the European Institutions is a member of the Committee of Representatives of the Orthodox Churches to the EU (CROCEU).
