It is the first legal tender banknote that features a female personality. The institution wants to promote the major role played by women in Romanian history and society.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The banknote with a face value of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bnr.ro\/page.aspx?prid=20196\">Lei\u00a020<\/a> will be put into circulation through the regional branches of the National Bank of Romania in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Constan\u021ba, Craiova, Ia\u0219i and Timi\u0219oara, when making cash payments to credit institutions\/the State Treasury.<\/p>\n<p>The new banknote will be presented to the public in a press conference on Friday, 26 November, by the Governor of the National Bank of Romania, Mr.\u00a0Mugur Is\u0103rescu.<\/p>\n<p>The first woman to be featured on a banknote issued by the National Bank of Romania was Maria, Queen of Greater Romania, whose face is next to King Ferdinand the Unifier&#8217;s face on the anniversary banknote issued for the Centennial of Romania&#8217;s Unification (1918-2018). Photo: National Bank of Romania<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Who was Ecaterina Teodoroiu<\/h3>\n<p>Sublieutenant Ecaterina Teodoroiu, the first woman who became a combating officer of the Romanian army, heroically fell in the battle of la M\u0103r\u0103\u0219e\u0219ti, while leading her platoon, on August 22, 1917.<\/p>\n<p>She was the third of a Gorj county family with eight children. She volunteered to fight in the army after she lost three brothers in World War I, the third dying right in her arms while she was a charity nurse.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At that moment, she changes the nurse clothes with her brother&#8217;s military effects,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/22-august-1917-marasesti-cade-in-lupta-din-dragoste-de-neam-sublocotenentul-ecaterina-teodoroiu?swcfpc=1\">recounts<\/a> Ioana Moru\u0219, daughter-in-law of Ecaterina Teodoroiu&#8217;s youngest sister.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_289095\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-289095\" style=\"width: 653px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-289095 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/69279113_2445872628807250_9140158806431367168_n-653x890.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"653\" height=\"890\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-289095\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ecaterina Teodoroiu wearing the Scout uniform, which explains the presence of the badge of the Romanian Scouts on the banknote. She returned to fight, although she did not need to, in the summer of 1917. The German attack in which she lost her life was defeated by the Romanians.<\/p>\n<p>In 1921, her body was moved into a dedicated memorial built in front of the T\u00e2rgu Jiu Cathedral, with national funerals. Her coffin was made of cannons captured from the enemy and the memorial was made by famous Romanian sculptor Mili\u021ba Petra\u0219cu.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_289093\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-289093\" style=\"width: 890px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-289093 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/basilica.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/mausoleul-1-890x592.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"890\" height=\"592\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-289093\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The woman hero&#8217;s resting place in the city of TT\u00e2rgu Jiurgu &#8211; a memorial sculpted by Romanian avant-garde artist Mili\u021ba Petra\u0219cu.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Description of the 20-Lei banknote<\/h3>\n<p><strong>The banknote with a face value of lei\u00a020 <\/strong>is printed on polymer substrate, with a mix of flat and raised printing techniques, 136 x 77 mm in size and with the predominant colour olive green.<\/p>\n<p>The obverse of the banknote shows the following representative graphical elements:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the portrait of Ecaterina Teodoroiu, her birth and death years (1894-1917);<\/li>\n<li>a floral element depicting a bouquet of crocuses (<em>Crocus flavus<\/em>);<\/li>\n<li>in the background, the central area features a badge of the Romanian Scouts.<\/li>\n<li>the face value in figures and letters, \u201c20 LEI DOU\u0102ZECI\u201d printed horizontally;<\/li>\n<li>the signatures of the Governor and the Chief Cashier;<\/li>\n<li>the coat of arms of Romania;<\/li>\n<li>the name of the issuing central bank \u201cBANCA NA\u021aIONAL\u0102 A ROM\u00c2NIEI\u201d;<\/li>\n<li>a stylised depiction of the infantry insignia &#8211; where the hero served;<\/li>\n<li>the NBR logo in a medallion;<\/li>\n<li>on the right, vertically, the face value in letters \u201cDOU\u0102ZECI LEI\u201d, the circulation date \u201c1 decembrie 2021\u201d, the face value in figures \u201c20\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The reverse of the banknote features a graphic composition showing:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a depiction of the winged figure of Victory on the Victory Medal;<\/li>\n<li>an image of the M\u0103r\u0103\u0219e\u0219ti Mausoleum and, behind the Mausoleum, a lily flower;<\/li>\n<li>the face value in letters and figures;<\/li>\n<li>the name of the issuing central bank \u201cBANCA NA\u021aIONAL\u0102 A ROM\u00c2NIEI\u201d;<\/li>\n<li>the NBR logo printed at the top right and bottom left in a rectangle;<\/li>\n<li>the text \u201cFALSIFICAREA ACESTOR BILETE SE PEDEPSE\u0218TE CONFORM LEGILOR\u201d (Forgery is punished according to the law);<\/li>\n<li>the serial number printed in black ink with same-size fonts on the left side, vertically, and in red ink, with fonts of ascending height on the top right side, horizontally.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To protect against forgery, the banknote includes a series of security features, some for the public, others traceable only when using special equipment, intended for employees in the banking system.<\/p>\n<p>Photo credit: NotaBn<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The National Bank of Romania will put into circulation a banknote featuring Ecaterina Teodoroiu, hero of the Romanian Unification War (WWI).
