The Diaconia Social Mission of the Metropolis of Bessarabia on Thursday opened a multifunctional centre for children and families in Chi\u0219in\u0103u, which will provide support to families facing crises – both among refugees and socially vulnerable families in the Republic of Moldova.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Metropolitan of Bessarabia, the representative of the Social-Philanthropic Sector of the Romanian Patriarchate, members of the diplomatic representations accredited in Chi\u0219in\u0103u and external partners of Diaconia Social Mission participated in the event.<\/p>\n

Attendees included Her Excellency Stella Avalone, Ambassador of Austria to the Republic of Moldova, His Excellency Marko Shevchenko, Ambassador of Ukraine to the Republic of Moldova, and Dr Marius Ciprian Toth, Charg\u00e9 d\u2019Affaires of the Embassy of Romania to the Republic of Moldova.<\/p>\n

The opening ceremony started with a blessing service officiated by His Eminence Metropolitan Petru together with priests from Chi\u0219in\u0103u.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are happy and thank all those who contributed to this work,\u201d Metropolitan Petru said. \u201cWe thank everyone for this gift because it is a divine gift, a gift for all people, for children, for young people, for the poor.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is our duty as Christians because God wants love from us. God loves us too, and that is why we must love those who do not know us,\u201d His Eminence Metropolitan Petru added.<\/p>\n

The Metropolitan of Bessarabia presented awards to those involved in setting up the centre and supporting the Diaconia Social Mission.<\/p>\n

Father Ciprian Ioni\u021b\u0103, President of the Filantropia Federation of the Romanian Patriarchate, received the Cross of the Metropolis of Bessarabia.<\/p>\n

Rev. Michael Landau, President of Caritas Europa, was awarded the Order \u201cSt. Stephen the Great\u201d, 1st degree.<\/p>\n

Mr Aurelian Iftimiu, Director of the Basilica News Agency of the Romanian Patriarchate, received the Order \u201cSt. Stephen the Great\u201d, 2nd degree.<\/p>\n

The representatives of Caritas Austria and Caritas Ambrosiana, Raphael Thurn and Sergio Malacrida, were also awarded the Order of St. Stephen the Great, 2nd degree.<\/p>\n

Christian Europe: caring for its citizens<\/h1>\n

\u201cPeople in need are precisely the ones we turn to, wherever they come from and wherever they will go. First, the pandemic crisis, then the crisis caused by Russia\u2019s aggression in Ukraine, put enormous pressure on our fellows fleeing from war, but also on the families in the Republic of Moldova who opened their doors to welcome them into our communities,\u201d said Igor Belei, Executive Director of the Diaconia Social Mission.<\/p>\n

\u201cSt. Anne\u2019s Centre is the logical continuation of the chain of kindness that includes the Primary Assistance Centre at the Criva customs point, the Anastasis Centre in Balti, the emergency programme… Since the first hours of the war, the Diaconia team has become a reliable partner for the authorities, who have made all their logistics available,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Igor Belei thanked the Catholic philanthropic organisation Caritas Europa, with which Diaconia Social Mission has been in partnership for two decades and was one of the partners in the establishment of \u201cSt. Anne\u201d Centre.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are probably few examples in Europe where the structures of the two churches – Orthodox and Roman Catholic – sustain such a long-lasting and generative dialogue in finding answers to the needs of the neighbour,\u201d Igor Belei noted.<\/p>\n

This relationship \u201cis yet another proof that Christian Europe shares the concern for its citizens, starting from the foundation that the Church has provided – Christian love of one\u2019s neighbour,\u201d the Director of Diaconia Social Mission underlined.<\/p>\n

Bridges between communities through an integrative approach<\/h1>\n

In his speech, Msgr. Michael Landau referred to the particularity of “St Anne” Centre.<\/p>\n

\u201cA remarkable aspect of this project is its integrative approach. It will not only deliver help to the Ukrainian refugees, but it will also keep the needs of the local population in Moldova in sight. The centre will provide educational services for both refugee children and children from the host community. This will build bridges between the communities.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd the Food Bank will provide food and non-food items to Ukrainian refugees and the most vulnerable within the Moldovan society.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn this sense, St Anne Centre is already following a long-term vision to strengthen the integrative forces within the society,\u201d Msgr. Michael Landau added.
\nSt Anne\u2019s Multifunctional Child and Family Centre will provide social assistance for refugees, personalised services for adults, legal advice, friendly spaces and after-school activities for children.
