In a message<\/a> at the beginning of Great Lent, Archbishop Irineu of Alba Iulia called the Lenten season \u201ca time of purification and illumination.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Romanian Archbishop noted that fasting \u201cis a gift offered to us by the Church\u201d, and through specific religious services, we are reminded that \u201csin and death have distanced us from God and each other.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to His Eminence, a Christian who fasts during the forty days of Lent \u201calready puts on Christ\u201d to participate even more thoroughly \u201cin His passions and come out with Him from the tomb victorious over evil and death.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Archbishop of Alba Iulia added that the Church addresses the call to understand Lent \u201cas a return to the usual ascetic struggle,\u201d explaining that it is a struggle that \u201cliberates us from the death and corruption of the fallen creation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe man who fasts breaks the infernal circle of the dialectic of desire and pleasure, of hunger and satiety, directing his desire towards the contemplation of heavenly realities,\u201d the Archbishop stressed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis helps him to walk in the newness of life (Rom. 6:4), living as a son of the resurrection (Luke 20:36),\u201d Archbishop Irineu noted in his message.<\/p>\n
