March 1827 – The religious painter and pedagogue MI\u0218U POPP was born in <\/p>\n
Bra\u0219ov. Studies at Bra\u0219ov and T\u00e2rgu Secuiesc, then at the Academy of <\/p>\n
Arts in Vienna. In 1849, he settled in Bucharest, where he painted <\/p>\n
several churches together with Constantin Lecca and Barbu St\u0103nescu (“Old<\/p>\n
Court”, “Saint George the New”, “R\u0103zvan Vod\u0103”, “Radu Vod\u0103”, chapel of <\/p>\n
Bellu cemetery). He painted the church of “Saints Voievodes” or princely<\/p>\n
church in T\u00e2rgu Jiu, the church of “Saint Nicholas” in C\u00e2mpulung and <\/p>\n
the church monastery of Fr\u0103sinei, founded by Bishop Calinic the Saint, <\/p>\n
all by himself. Back in Bra\u0219ov, he was a professor of the Orthodox <\/p>\n
Gymnasium for a while and painted several churches in the area: “The <\/p>\n
Holy Trinity” and “The Falling Asleep” in Satulung (67 scenes in <\/p>\n
tempera, many of them inspired by or copied after Western sources), the <\/p>\n
altar screens of the churches in Cernat, R\u00e2\u0219noc, \u021a\u00e2n\u021bari (Dumnbr\u0103vi\u021ba <\/p>\n
today), Araci, as well as four icons on the temple of the church in <\/p>\n
Toderi\u021ba-F\u0103g\u0103ra\u0219. He also painted many portraits: Michael the Brave, <\/p>\n
Gheorghe Laz\u0103r, Alexandru Ioan Cuza, Vasile Alecsandri, Mihail <\/p>\n
Kog\u0103lniceanu, C.A. Rosetti, Andrei Mure\u0219anu; paintings of Bible and <\/p>\n
mythological inspiration, landscapes. He passed away in 1892, in Bra\u0219ov <\/p>\n
