Today, 24 November 2013, on the second Sunday of the Nativity Lent, the Gospel text presenting the Parable of the rich governor and Keeping of the commandments<\/em> from St Luke, chapter 18, verses 18-27, was read in all places of worship of the Romanian Patriarchate. In the sermon delivered in the Chapel of St. Gregory the Illuminator<\/em>in the Patriarchal Residence, His Beatitude underlined the teachings arising from the Gospel text.<\/p>\n

“This Gospel text shows us that wealth can become a hindrance to salvation when people count on material wealth as the ultimate reality. <\/em>Of course, the Church has decided that this Gospel is read now in the Nativity Lent as a call to charity, to perform good deeds in order to help our fellow human beings”, said the Patriarch of Romania.<\/p>\n

It is not enough to be pious and to not harm anyone, but we need to do also a lot of good deeds, <\/em>added the Primate of the Romanian Orthodox Church.<\/p>\n

“The Gospel of St. Luke tells us that it is not enough to be pious and virtuous, to pray a lot, to be honest, to not harm anyone, but we need to do also a lot of good deeds around us. It is in vain to not harm anyone if we do not do good deeds to those who need our help. By doing these in this period, namely, strengthening piety, multiplying prayer, confession and communion, let not forget charity, namely, if we have no material goods or money or food to give to others at least to be charitable through a prayer for a sick man, for a poor a helping hand. A presence for a lonely man is a good deed, a word of encouragement for the discouraged is an act of mercy”, said also the Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church.<\/p>\n
