This afternoon, at 16.00 hours, the relics of the saint were taken out in procession in front of Saint Spiridon the New church of Bucharest, and then the Saint’s Akatistos was celebrated, followed by the Vesper service with Litany, celebrated by a group of priests and deacons headed by Rev Archimandrite Dionisie Constantin, patriarchal counsellor at the Workshops of the Bible Institute of Orthodox Mission.

To end with, His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel delivered a sermon about the life and activity of Saint Spiridon.

“Saint Hierarch Spiridon was born around 270, in Askia locality, Cyprus. He was a religious, faithful and merciful man. He felt great pity for the poor needy people in sufferance. He was a diligent devoted shepherd, and when the time came he married and had a daughter named Irene. After the death of his wife, due to his great devotion and kindness he was elected bishop of Trimitunda, a locality in Cyprus, near Salamina. This good hearted saint was also a miracle worker, so that he healed lots of sick people, helped many poor and other people in time of drought and famine”, His Beatitude said.

Contemporary with Saint Hierarch Nicholas, Saint Spiridon distinguished himself among the supporters of the right faith at the first Ecumenical Synod of 325. In the context of the theological disputes concerning the dogma of the Holy Trinity, he made a wonder which remained deeply rooted in the memory of the Church. “Saint Spiridon made the cross sign with his right hand and said: “In the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” holding a brick in his right hand. Suddenly, a flame came out of it, water poured on the ground and mud remained in his hand. Thus, he showed the mystery of the Holy Trinity, namely that although there are three elements, fire, mud and water, they make only one brick. The Father was represented by the fire, the Son by the mud and the Holy Spirit by water”, the Primate of the Romanian Orthodox Church explained.

The Patriarch of Romania offered the church of Saint Spiridon the New a set of holy vessels and several books recently come out at the publishing houses of the Romanian Patriarchate.

His Beatitude received an epitrachilos and an omophorion on behalf of the church, as well as a bunch of flowers offered by Rev Archimandrite Veniamin Goreanu, church-administrative counsellor of the Archdiocese of Bucharest.

Saint Hierarch Spiridon, celebrated tomorrow by the Romanian Orthodox Church, passed away in 348, and he was buried in the church of the Saints Apostles, in Trimitunda. After his body was found not rotten and good smelling, his relics were taken to Constantinople, then to Serbia, and then to Corfu island, Greece, where they have been preserved till today.

Tonight His Beatitude Daniel, Patriarch of Romania was in the middle of the faithful at Saint Spiridon the New church of Bucharest, Patriarchal Chapel and Metropolitan Cathedral.
