February 1879 \u2013 The future Metropolitan Visarion Puiu (baptized Victor)<\/p>\n
was born in Pa\u0219cani, county of Ia\u0219i. Studies at the Seminaries of Roman<\/p>\n
and Ia\u0219i, at the Faculty of Theology of Bucharest (1900 \u2013 1904) and at<\/p>\n
the Spiritual Academy of Kiev. Tonsured into monasticism in 1905 and<\/p>\n
ordained hierodeacon for the Episcopal Cathedrals in Roman and Gala\u021bi,<\/p>\n
vicar and director of the Seminary of Gala\u021bi (1909 \u2013 1918), director of<\/p>\n
the Seminary of Chi\u0219in\u0103u and exarch of the monasteries of Bessarabia<\/p>\n
(1918 \u2013 1921). Bishop of Arge\u0219 (2921 \u2013 1923), then of Hotin, seated in<\/p>\n
B\u0103l\u021bi (1923 \u2013 1935), Metropolitan of Bucovina, seated in Cern\u0103u\u021bi (1935 \u2013<\/p>\n
1940), dignity from which he retired in May 1940, then Metropolitan of<\/p>\n
Transnistria, seated in Odessa (1942 \u2013 1943). In August 1944, he left<\/p>\n
for the West of Europe, where he remained till his death (Austria,<\/p>\n
Italy, Switzerland, and since 1949 in Paris), where he headed a Romanian<\/p>\n
eparchy for Western Europe till 1958. On 21 February 1946, “The Trial<\/p>\n
of the People\u201d of Bucharest sentenced him to death “in absentia\u201d. Under<\/p>\n
the pressure of the communist authorities, the Holy Synod of the<\/p>\n
Romanian Orthodox Church had to depose him from his dignity in 1950; he<\/p>\n
was rehabilitated in 1990, after the fall of the communist regime. He<\/p>\n
wrote many works for guiding the priests, volumes of sermons, a<\/p>\n
monograph on the Monasteries of Bessarabia (Chi\u0219in\u0103u, 1919); supervisor<\/p>\n
of the spiritual cultural life in the eparchies he headed, he was the<\/p>\n
true “founder\u201d of the Cathedral of B\u0103l\u021bi. He died on 10 August 1964, in<\/p>\n
