February 1948 \u2013 Patriarch Nicodim Munteanu of the Romanian Orthodox<\/p>\n
Church (baptized Nicolae) passed away. Studies at “Veniamin\u201d Seminary of<\/p>\n
Ia\u0219i (1882 \u2013 1890). Then at the Spiritual Academy in Kiev (1890 \u2013 1895;<\/p>\n
with graduation in 1895). Tonsured into monasticism at Neam\u021b Monastery,<\/p>\n
with the name Nicodim (1894), ordained hierodeacon (1894) and hieromonk<\/p>\n
(1896); preacher at the metropolitan cathedral in Ia\u0219i (1895),<\/p>\n
archimandrite and appointed vicar of the Metropolitan See of Moldova<\/p>\n
(1898 \u2013 1902), then vicar to the Diocese of Lower Danube (1902 \u2013 1909)<\/p>\n
and director of the Seminary of “Saint Andrew\u201d in Gala\u021bi (1908 \u2013 1909)<\/p>\n
and assistant hierarch to the Metropolitan See of Moldova with the title<\/p>\n
“B\u0103c\u0103uanul\u201d (1909). On 18 February 1912, elected bishop of Hu\u0219i<\/p>\n
(enthroned on 3 March 1912); then archbishop locum tenens of Chi\u0219in\u0103u<\/p>\n
and Hotin (June 1918 \u2013 December 1919). Retired from the chair in Hu\u0219i,<\/p>\n
on 31 December 1923, he was then abbot of Neam\u021b Monastery (1924 \u2013 1935).<\/p>\n
As abbot he set up a monastic Seminary at Neam\u021b (1925 \u2013 1928) \u2013 moved<\/p>\n
then to Cernica \u2013 and a school for the monastery brethren (1928 \u2013 1937),<\/p>\n
and later on a Seminary of religious music (1937); over one hundred<\/p>\n
books have been printed at the printing house re-equipped at Neam\u021b. On<\/p>\n
23 January 1935 he is elected Metropolitan of Moldova (enthroned on 4<\/p>\n
February 1935). On 30 June 1939, he was elected Patriarch of the<\/p>\n
Romanian Orthodox Church (enthroned on 5 June), serving till his death.<\/p>\n
Honorable member of the Romanian Academy (5 October 1918), doctor<\/p>\n
“honoris causa\u201d of the Faculty of Theology of Cern\u0103u\u021bi (1920) in 1917,<\/p>\n
delegated by the Holy Synod to the Great Council in Moscow, which<\/p>\n
decided the re-establishment of the Russian Orthodox Patriarchate; in<\/p>\n
the autumn of 1946 he headed a Romanian synodal delegation to Moscow. He<\/p>\n
is one of the translators of the Romanian Bible; he has translated and<\/p>\n
adapted in Russian over one hundred theological works, books of sermons<\/p>\n
or religious brochures; he has written a few original theological works,<\/p>\n
especially of spiritual edification for faithful, speeches, pastoral<\/p>\n
