May 1875 \u2013 Metropolitan NIFON (baptised Nicolae Rusail\u0103) passed away in<\/p>\n
Bucharest (buried at Cernica). Monk at Cernica in 1809 and ordained<\/p>\n
hierodeacon for the Metropolitan See, later on hieromonk (1826), iconom<\/p>\n
at the Diocese of R\u00e2mnic (1827), archimandrite (1826), abbot at Cozia<\/p>\n
(1839), vicar of the Metropolitan See of Ungro-Wallachia (1841),<\/p>\n
ordained hierarch with the title of “Sevastias\u201d (1843), Bishop locum<\/p>\n
tenens of R\u00e2mnic (1848 \u2013 1850) and, at the same time “metropolitan locum<\/p>\n
tenens\u201d (August 1849 \u2013 September 1850). On 14 September 1850, elected<\/p>\n
Metropolitan of Ungro-Wallachia (enthroned on 8 October); on 11 January<\/p>\n
1865 he was awarded the title of “Primate Metropolitan of Romania\u201d,<\/p>\n
serving till his death. During his pastoral service the eparchial<\/p>\n
Seminaries were opened (closed during the Revolution of 1848); in 1852<\/p>\n
he set up a printing house of the Metropolitan See, where almost all the<\/p>\n
books of rite were printed (soon after taken over by the state); he<\/p>\n
re-established a few places of worship on his own expense: Zamfira<\/p>\n
Monastery, Cet\u0103\u021buia Skete in R\u00e2mnicu V\u00e2lcea and built the church of<\/p>\n
Letca Nou\u0103 from the scratch (today the county of Giurgiu). He was the<\/p>\n
president of the Ad Hoc Council of Bucharest (1857) and of the elective<\/p>\n
Assembly who elected Alexandru Ioan Cuza prince (24 January 1859); he<\/p>\n
was the first president of the Romanian Senate. During his pastoral<\/p>\n
service the famous church reforms of Alexandru Ioan Cuza took place, but<\/p>\n
he did not react against them (secularization, synodal law, law that<\/p>\n
appointed eparchial metropolitans and bishops and set up the Holy Synod<\/p>\n
of the Romanian Orthodox Church). In 1872, he set up \u2013 with his own<\/p>\n
money \u2013 a second Seminary in Bucharest, with 8 forms, of his name,<\/p>\n
operating till 1948, when it was dissolved; the seminary lived on the<\/p>\n
money the Metropolitan bequeathed and on the incomes of the Letca Nou\u0103<\/p>\n
