May 1858 \u2013 Bishop IOSIF B\u0102DESCU (baptised Traian) was born in \u0218opotul<\/p>\n
vechi, county of Cara\u0219-Severin. Gymnasium studies at Caransebe\u0219, Lugoj<\/p>\n
and Seghedin, juridical studies at the University of Budapest (graduated<\/p>\n
in 1884) and theological ones at the University of Cern\u0103u\u021bi, where he<\/p>\n
was awarded the doctor\u2019s degree in 1889. Secretary (1888-1903),<\/p>\n
eparchial assessor (counsellor), professor at the Pedagogical<\/p>\n
Theological Institute and editor of the “Calendarul Rom\u00e2nului\u201d in<\/p>\n
Caransebe\u0219. Unmarried deacon (1890), then priest (1899), he was tonsured<\/p>\n
into monasticism at Hodo\u0219-Bodrog Monastery, with the name Iosif (1902),<\/p>\n
having been ordained protosingel (1903) and archimandrite (1919).<\/p>\n
Elected Bishop of Caransebe\u0219 in 1909, but rejected by the Government in<\/p>\n
Budapest; re-elected on 8 March 1920, he was ordained and installed on<\/p>\n
27 September \/10 October 1920. He supervised the activity of the<\/p>\n
Theological Institute (since 1927 member of the Academy), set up a<\/p>\n
school for church singers, a museum and an eparchial library. He<\/p>\n
published various other articles and speeches in “Foaia diocezan\u0103\u201d in<\/p>\n
Caransebe\u0219 and in some other Romanian periodicals. He passed away on 11<\/p>\n
