May 1778 \u2013 Metropolitan IACOB PUTNEANUL, of Moldova, passed away at<\/p>\n
Putna Monastery. Monk ever since a young man at Putna, where he had<\/p>\n
studied, abbot of the monastery (1744), then Bishop of R\u0103d\u0103u\u021bi (August<\/p>\n
1745) and Metropolitan of Moldova (13 November 1750); retired in<\/p>\n
February 1769 and returned to Putna, where he lived till the end of his<\/p>\n
life. In his time, over ten books of rite and of teaching were printed:<\/p>\n
Spiritual Alfavita (1755), Sinopsis with much teaching (1757), Primer<\/p>\n
(1755) etc. He supervised the schools in R\u0103d\u0103u\u021bi and Ia\u0219i and urged the<\/p>\n
parents to send their children to school. Following his insistence, the<\/p>\n
fee for the living stock was dissolved, and then when he opposed its<\/p>\n
re-introduction, he had to retire. While at Putna, he had the monastery<\/p>\n
renovated and the outside walls of the buildings in the precinct raised;<\/p>\n
he set up a spiritual school at Putna, together with Archimandrite<\/p>\n
