30 July 2007 \u2013 The Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church TEOCTIST<\/p>\n
AR\u0102PA\u0218U (baptised Teodor) passed away. He was Patriarch of Romania for<\/p>\n
21 years, from 1986 \u2013 2007. Patriarch Teoctist joined the monastery as<\/p>\n
brother at Vorona Monastery in 1928, and then went to Neam\u021b Monastery,<\/p>\n
in 1931. He graduated the Monastic Seminary at Cernica Monastery in<\/p>\n
1940. He was tonsured into monasticism at Bistri\u021ba Monastery, with the<\/p>\n
name of Teoctist, on 6 August 1935, and ordained hierodeacon for this<\/p>\n
monastery, on 4 January 1937. In 1940, he was admitted at the Faculty of<\/p>\n
Theology of Bucharest and graduated it in 1945; in parallel he had<\/p>\n
various positions within the framework of the Archdiocese of Bucharest<\/p>\n
and served as deacon at the Patriarchate.<\/p>\n
On 1 March 1945, he<\/p>\n
was transferred to the Eparchial Centre of Ia\u0219i, and ordained hieromonk<\/p>\n
on 25 March 1945, and archimandrite in 1946. He attended the courses of<\/p>\n
the Faculty of Philology of Ia\u0219i from 1945 \u2013 1947, having been servant<\/p>\n
priest, then great eclesiarch at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Ia\u0219i and<\/p>\n
exarch of the monasteries of the Archdiocese of Ia\u0219i (1946 \u2013 1948). From<\/p>\n
1948 \u2013 1950, he was vicar of the same Archdiocese. On 28 February 1950,<\/p>\n
he was elected and on 5 March 1950 ordained Assistant Bishop to the<\/p>\n
Patriarch with the title of Boto\u0219\u0103neanul. In this dignity he was<\/p>\n
secretary of the Holy Synod, rector of the University Theological<\/p>\n
Institute of Bucharest from 1950 \u2013 1954 and headed various departments<\/p>\n
within the Patriarchal Administration.<\/p>\n
On 28 July 1962, he<\/p>\n
was elected, and on 16 September installed Bishop of Arad, where he<\/p>\n
served for 10 years (December 1969 \u2013 December 1970, Bishop locum tenens<\/p>\n
of Oradea). On 28 January 1973, he was elected Archbishop of Craiova and<\/p>\n
Metropolitan of Oltenia, and on 25 February 1973 installed.<\/p>\n
On<\/p>\n
25 September 1977, elected Archbishop of Ia\u0219i and Metropolitan of<\/p>\n
Moldova and Suceava, and on 9 October 1977, installed. From July 1980<\/p>\n
till January 1982, he was Metropolitan locum tenens of Transylvania.<\/p>\n
After the death of Patriarch Iustin, on 31 July 1986, he became<\/p>\n
Patriarch locum tenens. On 9 November 1986 he was elected and on 16<\/p>\n
November 1986 enthroned Archbishop of Bucharest, Metropolitan of<\/p>\n
Ungrowallachia and Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church, serving<\/p>\n
till his death.<\/p>\n

Telegraful Rom\u00e2n\u201d magazines, books of prayer, pastoral letters. The<\/p>\n
articles and speeches published in magazines, as well as the forewords<\/p>\n
were gathered under the title “On the steps of the Christian service\u201d,<\/p>\n
in 13 volumes (1980 \u2013 2003). As Patriarch, he supervised all the<\/p>\n
editorial activity of the Bible and Orthodox Mission Institute. A series<\/p>\n
of works with theological and historical character, books of rite, as<\/p>\n
well as a new edition of the Synodal Bible (2002) were published with<\/p>\n
