13 March 1888 – Historian and university professor DRAGOMIR SILVIU was born in Gurasada, county of Hunedoara. Gymnasium studies at Blaj and Novisad, in Serbia (1897 – 1905). He graduated the courses of the Faculty of Theology of Cernăuți (1905 – 1909), which awarded him the doctor’s degree in 1910; specialized courses at the Universities of Vienna and Moscow, archive studies in Carlovit, Belgrade and Moscow. Professor at the Theological Pedagogical Institute of Sibiu (1911-1919), then at the Faculty of Philology and Philosophy of the University of Cluj (1919 – 1947), where he taught History of the South-East of Europe. Corresponding member (1916), then titular (1928) of the Romanian Academy, Minister for Minorities (1938-1940); during the communist regime he was imprisoned in Caransebes and Sighet (1947 – 1955). He published studies of great scientific value on the church division of the Romanians of Transylvania from 1698 – 1701, on the fight of the faithful over here for defending Orthodoxy in the 18th century, on the cultural religious relations of the Romanians with the Russians, on the history of the Revolution of 1848-1849 in Transylvania and Banat, and on the Romanian rights over these provinces.
